Do they have to explain why?
There could be many reasons.

Yes it is gov't org?

So what?
Lots of things are done without explanation.

You suggesting Natural England should be made immune to FOI requests?
Are we using blue tits to carry top secret messages now? I know we're struggling cash wise but are things really that bad?

NE is a low grade government department. They should absolutely be accountable in a democracy.

Why?
They're not just killing Blue Tits if you read the article.Other species are on the list. There's a reason for it why do we need to know or care?

I've read the article.

You don't care obviously, but some people do and that the whole point of the FOI act.

There's a bigger issue here, are we allowed to question authority?
If your answer is "no" then obviously we should scrap the FOI act.

If yes then people will request information you have no interest in - that's just the way it is.

Personally I want to know why they're killing the birds they are - it's not like government departments don't have form on doing stuff for the wrong reasons.

Species are culled all over the Planet.
People "care" when it suits.
Would you "care" if it were Rats...or Cockroaches....or Disease carrying Bacteria?
There must be a reason. It's not just for fun!

That's not the point.
Whether someone cares or not issuing a FOI request is what this is about.

There's always a reason, doesn't mean it has to be a good one and that was why we were given the power to issue FOI requests in the first place.

I mean you obviously like shooting animals and if the government refused to issue licenses for animal shooting (assuming such things are even needed) then I'd defend your right to make such a request.
Your reasons for caring about such things are moot, it's the mechanism not the reason that's important.

I wonder what the blue tits are doing. Not as if they are gulls or other big birds? Must be swarms of the things Hitchcock style? Maybe disturbing some notables peace and quiet daring to squeak

Some rich person has put out a very attractive ornate bird feeder which is attracting blue tits and their associated poo on their highly polished granite patio.

Since it's ornamental and not really meant to be used they've contacted Natural England seeking a cull and started their mail "You probably know who I am".

(Or it could be something else).

And you've reached that conclusion how?
Yes I shoot(Air guns) but at an indoor range(as does my son).I haven't shot an animal in well over 30 years!I would shoot vermin if I could get a perm...that doesn't mean I like killing things  As posted in another thread I've also been a member of the RSPB for 30-odd years and the YOC before that
People making assumptions and accusations just because they don't agree/understand is what creates hatred.
Being a cyclist you should understand this

I thought you'd posted as much in this or another thread?

My apologies if this isn't the case.

seems like Natural England have failed to answer a FOI request in the elegally required time about the culling of herring gulls

Apparantly Herring Gulls are red listed, a declining species in need of conservation.
