Recommend me a phone.
Recommend me a phone.
Here is the thing. I have an old but very good MotoG phone. Does almost everything I need. But. It is big and heavy. Oh and sometimes people hear an echo on it that I can't cure. However, it is fine on the bike and in the car. Other times when I go out or go for a run, it is too big. It won't easily fit in a pocket and it swings around in a rear pocket when I run. On these occasions I only need the phone and camera.
Recently I bought for a tenner an old Vodaphone smart phone. Which works well and is small and light. However the camera, 5mb is dire. So anybody recommend of an old cheap small smartphone with a good camera? My old Blackberry, 3mb camera, is better than this one. It has to be 3g compatible though.
Thanks. Jim

Sorry. Should have said I'm only looking at up to £30 [tight git] for an old S/H phone. I break, drop, lose phones. Plus I don't use them that much. Z3 over budget. Thanks.

TBF now I've looked they are still making strong money (stronger than I expected TBH), which is probably reflective of how good a little phone they are.
Re: Recommend me a phone.
The Nokia cameras are, as a rule pretty good. And because of Nokia being bought by Microsoft, and all of the chaos with Windows phones, they tend to be pretty cheap. The main exceptions are the ones with really good cameras, like the 808 Pureview and Lumia 1020.
But if you don't need all the apps, or an exceptional camera, you can get a decent one for under £30 by looking for a Nokia with a 5MP or higher camera. The more pictures you take, the more memory you need, although Nokia developed a proprietary technology to reduce picture memory requirements, pictures still take up a fair amount of space.
It's hard to recommend a specific model without researching what's widely available, but if you find something that seems suitable, google reviews of it.

yep, I've got a lumia 550 and it does everything I need as I don't do much with apps. Got a usable camera, reasonable storage, not overly fast but not overly slow, battery life is OK, doesn't do strava but there are bike gps apps available for it. Just need to make sure you do a full update when you get it otherwise you may have battery probs. there endeth my knowledge of phones.
Re: Recommend me a phone.
I recently bought a 2nd hand Windows 8.1 phone a Nokia Lumia 635 ( £19 incl £5 postage from Ebay) that is also 4G. Claims to have a 5mp camera but I am not convinced as my old Kodak Easyshare CX7530 camera is far better that also has 5mp. 5mp should be good enough. Maybe I havent got the hang of the Lumia camera yet as it is supposed to be auto focus. The phone is ok as it has the bonus of in built Here! maps ( or the Microsoft equivalent ) that is in some respects equivalent to Goole street maps and has the virtue they can be downloaded onto the phone so dont need an active connection to use them. And the battery is easily replaceable.
Re: Recommend me a phone.
Thanks. But those Lumias are big phones. I was looking for something smaller and more pocketable. The Samsung Galaxy pocket looks good but camera is only 2mb. Photos on reviews though look better than the Vodaphone 5mb. One thing with the old one I have I have found is Google does not support the software so cycle apps are a no no. Not that it's a big deal.

What size? Not all of the Lumias are big.

Oh. I didn't know that. I saw one with a big screen and assumed.

My daughter had one for 3 years ( long time for a kid!). I don't remember the model. It had a screen that was 4" or less (so smaller than the iPhone 4 or 5) and an 8MP camera. It wasn't very expensive when I got it for her (£80 in 2014 or 2015?), so I imagine that sort of thing would go for peanuts, now.
The only disadvantage of the phone was that it didn't have a huge memory. Mini V doesn't like to delete stuff from her phone, so she was always running out of memory.

Always liked the camera on my old Nokia 620 (6.1 x 1.1 x 11.5 cm) not to mention the separate button to operate it
