Obituaries miscellaneous, Bill Withers .
We have had threads about Sir Ken Dodd and others, I think a general obituary section is worthwhile for interesting people who have passed on (the Guardian is quite good for obituaries of famous and less-famous people)
Amos Oz (79) just died, Jewish writer, pacifist, academic, I had heard of him but did not know much about him till I read his obituary, 'I love Israel but I don't like it much', he said
Maybe he should have gone into politics

Re: Obituaries miscellaneous, Amos Oz..
I think he was better cast as a writer. There are no winners in Israeli politics at present.
Certainly brave to make his stand. R.I.P.

Re: Obituaries miscellaneous, Gordon Banks..
Gordon Banks just died, he was one of the best goalkeepers, Number One
When a dog got onto the pitch at Filbert Street he caught it!
Is Bansky they graffiti artist related to him?
I think, when someone who has had a good life dies at a good age, one may be sad but it is good to remember their achievements, sadness should not be the predominant emotion, when Sir Ken Dodd died there might have been as much laughter as tears
Why are so few cyclists interested in football?

Re: Obituaries miscellaneous, Gordon Banks..
Any footballer who's death hits the news with stories of Pele giving interviews dating he was the greatest says it all I think. Pele is on record saying things like his save on the world Cup against Pele was the best bit of goalkeeping and he was a really nice guy / friend.
Never met the guy and can't remember seeing him play on TV clips. Football holds no interest for me. I know who Pele is. I have seen him play in football clips. I also know he went into football officialdom on Brasil after playing. I also know he has always come across as someone with honesty and integrity. If anyone like that came out on someone's death to give them obituary interviews then I'd know they had done well.
It is often the quality of those who speak up for the deceased that shows how respected they were in their field.

A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

When did 81 become a "good age" .... Feature in last weeks comic about 80 year old club rider ....
And ,,
"Why are so few cyclists interested in football?" .. the answers in the sentence ....

I guess better than average equals good.
Women's life expectancy from birth remains 82.9 years and for men it is 79.2[

Re: Obituaries miscellaneous, Bruno Ganz
Another departure reported today.
The actor Bruno Ganz.
Who? some may ask.
Well, if I describe him as the most-subtitled-on-YouTube actor ever, it'll click!
Apparently he wasn't too keen on all the parodies spawned, but he held his peace. And he wasn't either German or Austrian, he was Swiss. And of course nothing like the character he is most famous for portraying.
R.I.P.

BG recently portrayed Sigmund Freud in Der Trafikant, set in Wien in ww2, maybe there was some resemblance to him
So good I saw it twice
One of the best German - SPEAKING actors, not of German nationality

Sad loss Bryn as he always struck me as being a sincere Socialist and not one of those that seem to want celebrity rather than sticking to the job they are paid to do.

Re: Obituaries miscellaneous, Paul Flynn..
He was pretty sick at the end, I think he should have retired at the last election, MPs should retire like normal people so youngsters can take over. Are there other professions where many people work at 80+?
What is the house of Lords for? Old MPs!
'He who has many enemies, has many friends' applied to Mr Flynn, he had so many opinions many people loved and hated him
