If the excuse is valid, it doesn't say much for meat quality.

When they test meat products for steroids etc are they testing for active substances or waste chemicals that show that steroids have provided enhancement? If the former then it suggests that to avoid drug use one must be vegetarian or vegan.

British Cycling requires all its members (not only racing licence holders, even commute members who aren't insured even for sportives!) to abide by the anti-doping policies so they can't take them, which seems pretty offensive to me.

Not sure if serious?

Yes, I am. Steroids are not side-effect-free drugs. It's stupid to take them unless you need to for medical reasons.

I have never been able to make up my mind about the recreational use of drugs- to me, the evidence on whether they should be legal or not remains inconclusive (and I try to keep up with it, as I prefer to base my opinions on facts than assumptions). In general, in those circumstances where it does not hurt other people, I think people ought to be able to make their own choices, however stupid I may think those choices are. But I personally would not take drugs recreationally, or as a performance enhancer ( as a performance enhancer I do object to them, because that causes harm and injustice) .

My personal distaste for drug taking without medical justification is a bit unusual- it's because for many years I had a very painful illness where I had to take a lot of painkillers. Enough, and strong enough ones, for me to be very concerned about the long-term effects. For some reason (and I can't explain precisely why) it irritated/irritates me that people risked the side effects of drugs for mere fun when I had no choice but to risk them for survival. It's sort of, well, 'I have to, but they don't, why are they being so stupid?'. An emotional response, of course, and not one to base an opinion about legality on, so I don't. But that's how I feel about it.

It was your warning of premature death in the context of a 90+ yo user that prompted the enquiry

Men, after the age of 35 naturally begin to produce less testosterone. Some more than others. This isn't a bad thing, as it protects you from various cancers in the long run. However there's always a trade off with nature. And that trade off is less muscle mass, inability to create or maintain muscle mass and increased fat production and retention. Hence the middle aged spread.

There are literally dozens of legal and illegal drugs and supplements available which won't completely reverse this trend but can slow it down or even stop the decline.
Anabolic steroids aren't one of them. The best nutrition advice I ever got (from a world class sports nutritionist) is drink whole, full fat milk.

Yep. It's that simple. Full fat milk contains all the necessary fats and chemicals to produce testosterone and is clinically proven to improve muscle retention in men over 40. No drugs, no abusive regimes. Just milk and regular cardio sport. Weight training obviously helps as does a good diet, but these two together, as we age are as good a tool as any available over, or even under the counter.
