The Spine race
The Spine race
Is anyone else tracking this race? http://live.thespinerace.com/
I began following it last year when conditions were dreadful with deep snow.
This year a woman Jasmin Paris is now looking unbeatable. A full 9 miles ahead of the nearest man. She’s covered an incredible 240 mls on foot since 8:00 Sunday morning.

Jasmin Paris has got yet another record. If my maths is correct she has had less than 8 hrs sleep since Sunday morning.

268 miles in 83 hours I suspect she went a little faster than you walking
I couldn’t stay awake that long yet alone keep moving.

Never heard of it and only a vague idea that such things existed, watching some of the vids now, what an achievement for anyone to complete it, but that winning time seems impossible.

Re: The Spine race
Hi,
I sleep about 3.5 hrs a night for the last three years irrespective of work I do.
When I was walking the pennine way solo I was carrying about 45 Ibs and did one day 46 miles in 16.5 hrs, another was 21 miles in 10.5 hrs in the mist with no path to follow and a hand held compass, very difficult on your own with nothing to point your compass at.
On one of my failed jaunts last year I was awake for about 26 hrs, on the move for 22 hrs and took one 20 minute power nap.
I find the more I do the less sleep I need.
This sounds stupid but when I was running about 38 years ago I would never sleep apart from Saturday night, go to bed but could tell the time by the beep beep of my watch every hour overnight.
This race sounds like another walk and run down the hills, no disrespect for the participants.
The pennine way is also rather flat.
Wish I was young again

Like they do on the Bob Graham round.

Hi,
Been there done that!
1000' in 40 miles is flat, devon flattist is hillier at 900' in 30 miles
On Naylor I don't know only he held the record, very possible he had support, you would need it for sure all those miles on your own with no pacer.
I kept banging on to a mate of mine that unsupported is hard work...........................bike............no comment.
Then one day he said that his mate reckoned that unsupported was not comparable to riding in a group.............needed his mate to tell him
Walking days on end on your own is hard work as you have nothing to gauge your pace, so you go hell for leather because you are afraid to go slow and disappoint yourself, ist day and a half was hell until I settled into a pace, cycling in this respect is easier by far.

Re: The Spine race
Hi,
Its difficult to say with accuracy on the terrain of pennine way, I will admit my rough calculations might be out.
But pennine way is path mostly, so its not comparable with say unpathed moorland like Dartmoor.
Years ago I was violently introduced to orienteering of the running kind.
I used to do a forrest on sunday morning, 8.5 miles in 2.5 hours without stops...........running all the way.

Re: The Spine race
Moorland running / hiking is never really easy. There are no smooth surfaces, there are constantly things to disrupt your rhythm, so while it is not like fell running it isn't easy. I imagine conditions this year will have been fairly good for January, with less rain than average for the preceding weeks and not much snow or even frost. That must have made the record time possible. But a great performance nevertheless.
Re: The Spine race
For anyone wanting to do something along the same lines but more up and down, rather than along ridges, you could look at Offa's Dyke.
https://kingoffasdyke.co.uk/course/
My wife and I walked the southern half a couple of years ago and the route of the dyke itself and of the path are mental. It climbs up to a hilltop then immediately drops down to a valley bottom, then up the other side, then straight down..... There are easier bits but the tough bits are really tough. I remember one climb that ended up with me and the missus climbing on all fours with our rucksacks on, sweat dripping off the tips of our noses. great fun. It would make a hell of a run if you were up to it, which I am not.

Yeah right!
On any terrain it's nothing short of astounding and I strongly suspect you've not done anything anywhere near that kind of mileage in that kind of time!
