Well, perhaps our Cross-Channel wine-drinking neighbours need a solution to a more pressing problem:

I have to admit, my own remedy to this problem is to break the pain in half on leaving the shop. Far from ideal!
Suppose that this room is a lift. The support breaks and down we go with ever-increasing velocity.

The word pannier derives, of course, from pain. A pannier was meant to carry your daily bread home.

Yes - and of course they were originally attached to a horse or donkey. Unfortunately cycle panniers are usually too shallow for the standard French baguette or pain.
