My hammers of choice have always been the 4oz Ball Peen and the 30mm nylon double faced .... oh .. and the 7 lb and 14 lb sledge .....

Winter legs have set in.

Generally I do a job and not give a thought to how the tool was made. I like to watch "How it's made" TV program and sometimes tools crop up.
I wonder sometimes who made the first tool, such as a hacksaw. Without a saw how did they make a saw. ?
Who and how was it discovered that the hardening and tempering process would alter the physical and chemical behaviour of metals ?
Things to ponder over when nothing better to do.

Initially toolmaking it would be trial and error then refined over millenia,with things forgotten and refound along the way,check out Japanese toolmaking,some of the finest steels available,the Samuri sword is an incredible made blade.Quality Japanese wood chisels are fantastic,their wood saws which cut on the pull stroke similarly so,I threw away my western push cut hand saws years ago and now always fit a hacksaw blade to cut on the pull stroke .

Coincidently I thought of the Samurai swords when writing the above. Has it all just been trial and error or just a happy mistake. Obviously once the basic idea comes to light then you can try other things to hopefully better the product.
