But on this forum really you're discussing the subject with someone who's only an acquaintance, not a friend or a work colleague who you josh with.

Whilst eating lunch I've just passed the time with a work colleague. Whatever we had talked about and whatever view he posited l would not have told him he was talking rubbish or something more unprintable - l don't know him well enough to do that. Or if you really do do that a lot of people would get up from the table thinking you are something unprintable.

You obviously work in a different environment to me.

Did they not used to fold newspapers in the olden days then?
Don't know about that, but in the very olden days I reckon newspapers must have looked like this, and been a bit difficult to fold:

p.s. perhaps this is what we mean by the forum hitting rock bottom....

Family friendly?
I take it you mean open to all including children etc?
All good intentions but (and I'm sure someone will do a Poll  ) I doubt there's many under 30 frequent this Forum let alone minors :?:
RE swearing/bad/foul language...what is that exactly? It's just language. Some people find things "offensive" some don't.
RE arguing nicely.I personally would prefer to be able to "argue" as I would if I were sat across the table from someone in a pub/cafe/at work etc but I'm not allowed to.IMO telling someone they're talking rubbish is not an insult in anyway shape or form but here is is seen as such :| If we were in the same room and I disagreed with someone I wouldn't tell them they were talking rubbish...I can't print what I'd say

I think your pub/cafe/at work analogy is an excellent one, but not for the reason you intended. Most people going in say, Bettys, would expect there to be a quite different atmosphere to say, a traditional transport cafe. They wouldn't get very far in either expecting everything to change to suit their own tastes.

Re 661-Pete's comments about the language in the Guardian, again you know what you are getting. Until quite recently, some national newspapers were publishing pic's which bordered on soft porn. People choose their newspaper according to their own tastes.

If I get into conversation with someone who has strange, different, disagreeable views I keep quiet and try to learn, maybe ask some naive questions
A wiseperson said, 'one may learn more from ones enemies than from ones friends'

I would generally not tell someone they were speaking rubbish, especially if they were bigger than I

Not sure if I would mind being called a troll, I have a thick grey beard, besides in many stories trolls are friendly

This is still a quite civilised forum, up to a point. And although I like a discussion but find more often than not poster's here seem to be posting to themselves - example; poster appears to ask a question...get's a reply and there it often ends - no thanks, not a murmur.

I'd like to know just how many cyclists actually post on a thread like the tea shop ?

Me ? I first joined the CTC in 1975 (we had a school cycle touring club), and joined what was then the SV-CC (now V-CC) in the 1980s...folk were generally friendlier way back then.

Different atmosphere, yes, but it wouldn't/doesn't change the way I would speak to someone! The surroundings don't change me or my opinion!
I have a friend who tries to mask his Yorkshire accent when ordering in cafes/pubs etc.He tries to speak "properly" as he puts it.It annoys me and I pull him up on it every time

Could a cooling-off function be added to the software? Some people argue back and forth every couple of minutes, the situation escalates, one smells anger :(

20-30 minutes before one may post a reply, I suggest

The forum software supports pre-modding I believe. This means that if this imposed on a particular member, their posts have to be approved by a Mod before they appear.

I have no idea how often this is imposed, if at all. It's the next most severe option before a ban. But it necessitates a heavy workload for our hard-pressed Mods.

I had this sanction imposed on myself once, some years ago, on the Grauniad comments. My sin was to post a complaint about - guess what! - moderation. I then committed the even worse sin of repeating my complaint. High treason! But they lift the sanction if you then behave for a while...

Suspension for a couple of weeks might be appropriate, is this used?

Questions to Vorpal, what is the norsk word for trolling, I mean for bullying in the www?
Are trolls the creatures good or bad in norsk culture, or both? Are they big or small?

Thanks very much in advance for your answers
