HS2 - Great train robbery c4+1 now

Postby Tangled Metal » 11 Feb 2019, 9:22pm

A channel 4 +1 programme on now. It's looking at whether the billions of pounds about to be spent on HS2 would be better spent on other rail projects.

Does anyone else suspect this is going to argue the money should be spent on the southeast network? A London based documentary maker sick of crowded trains?

If that's the way it goes I'll give it a miss. Personally I think more money needs to flow north than even HS2 money. We need to balance the country a bit more IMHO.

If anyone watches it please let me know. I am no big fan of HS2 but at least it's trying to develop the other regions.

The bit I saw was arguing that the money would be better spent on the intercity network between and commuter routes around the north... while not mentioning the new Mark 5 intercity trains currently being tested before introduction later this year or the new Civity commuter trains on order as well as ones due to be transferred from other regions.

Not yet watched it yet but it is part of the "Dispatches" current affairs series. It is now available on the Channel 4 catchup service if anyone wants to see it.

Here's the link to the programme - https://www.channel4.com/programmes/dis ... /69215-001

(https://www.channel4.com/programmes/dispatches gives you the main Dispatches page which list all the programmes if the one above changes.)

It recommended spending money on the kinds of things already being introduced? I guess that's not too bad. I really thought it would be arguing for more rail spending on London and SE infrastructure. Well better than I thought.

It's also repeated about 4am Thursday morning if anyone wants to set a recorder.

I won't be watching it of course!

However, I was in Lidl's yesterday afternoon and glanced at the newspapers on the rack by the checkout.
I think it was the DM (could be wrong) and the front page headline was all about MPs being in revolt (or words to that effect) over the soaring astronomical costs of HS2 and are thinking about scrapping it.

I hope they do.
