Keep your enemies close and stab your friends in the back. The tory way at leadership contest time.

I doubt Labour are much different. Hint milliband did for milliband big brother by nicking Union support from under him. Judging by the way the elder brother left politics ASAP afterwards for academia it wasn't done in a friendly/brotherly way neither. All is fair in love, war and politics (some might say politics is just proxy war anyway).

I thought Boris very ineloquent in his campaign opening gambit.
Stumbling, even though he was clearly reading from a statement.
A statement which although presumably long in the writing and editing contained nothing uplifting.

Indeed the huge and major omission was that it contained nothing whatsoever that suggested that Brexit would lead to an improvement in the fortunes of the UK, either socially or economically.
Astonishing really that he could promise no benefit?

The focus was entirely upon "the will of the people" and about the survival of the Tory Party.

It is not the will of all the people as that other thread has so clearly demonstrated.
I would go so far as to say that the case for Brexit has been pretty thoroughly trashed on that thread.
Leavers reduced to simplistic unrelated metaphors and to "get over it".

And the fate of the Tories is, quite literally, all their own selfish, greedy and narrow minded doing.

There is some solace there though.
If come October and the Tories have installed a hard Brexit leader who then fails to gain any further agreements with the EU (and I think that is quite likely) then we will leave. The flow of business, skills and industry out of the UK will continue.
Inflation will rise on a continued weak pound and most of us will continue to get poorer in more ways than just one.

I hope the EU does now do that, I am sad to say.
Say goodbye and close the door without further negotiation.
It is time for them to end the fiasco and move mainland Europe forward.

After a certain amount of time those things will then at last, come home to roost for any new Tory leader.

I personally look forward to that as a bringer of some solace.
Boris, with his foolish personal ambition, will reap what he has so long deserved,
approbation and confinement to the dustbin, in which lie a couple of other has beens.

Bring it on.

He's being reined in so he can't make gaffs. He's being heavily managed and there's a bit whiff of Lynton Crosby in his leadership contest. Of course he's going to be stilted in that launch speech. The less he appears like Boris the greater his chance of winning it apparently. He's also going to be more presidential than Blair. Indeed I suspect as pm he's going to be like a Bush junior. Basically being a figurehead while brighter people do the work.

Well there's talk that his deputy mayor back in the day, whilst not being involved in his campaign, is poised to become part of his number 10 team in an active role. Apparently he's a clever chap (although I can't remember his name).

I am reliably informed that Johnson is not unintelligent.
He is trapped in a dilemma of his own making.

He wanted to be leader after a close referendum to "Remain".
He saw it as a chance to represent the large Leave faction and so gain power.
That all went a bit pear shaped.

Now he is forced to campaign for what he only saw as a vehicle to power, not his full conviction.
He bribes a certain sector with promised tax cuts (£50000 plus).

And, as I stated above, can promise NOTHING positive to the UK as a whole as a result of leaving.
If he believed that, he would state it, repeatedly, surely?

I await aforementioned solace.

Hi,
So with Labour forgotten and Tories defeated who will the the remainers place their hope in next?
I am happy with boris in charge though Javid looks a good second.

Remainers think it's all over but it will be when we leave.

No need for long drawn out posts and get slated by the soposid intelligent.

I presume that like me you're looking forward to that nice big tax cut.

Nothing to do with Brexit, but this astonishes me.

The man has twice been sacked from jobs for lying.

He's regarded by diplomats at home and abroad as lazy and incompetent as foreign secretary.

He's supported for leader by many Tory MPs precisely because they believe he'll be good at doing a U-turn on his Brexit promises once elected.

According to Matthew Parris, former Tory MP,
"a habitual liar, a cheat, a conspirator with a criminal pal to have an offending journalist’s ribs broken, a cruel betrayer of the women he seduces, a politician who connived in a bid for a court order to suppress mention of a daughter he fathered, a do-nothing mayor of London and the worst foreign secretary in living memory”

All politicians promise tax cuts, but everyone wants people to pay more tax .......... so long as it's not them personally.
All they do is rearrange the deckchairs.

What do you mean by this? That the country will be in ruins? That non-compliant citizens should be shot? That Parliament will cease? That free speech will be silenced. That there won't be any more dispute about what Brexit should be?

If we know what you mean, then we can agree or disagree.

We can but hope...

+1 to that, except that the worst of them could form an even more arrogant and right wing party, and get the press to tell us to vote for them. Where is this country heading? - I can't blame the Scots for wanting out.
