The Brutality of the Torys

“You’ll lose some of your payment… This reduction will last 229 days.” Two hundred and 29 days for a single missed appointment. That’s almost 32 weeks of punishment. Or, if you prefer, February until August, with no money at all.
How it used to be and how it is now. How has our country come to this?

An utter disgrace that anyone should be treated this way. Inhuman behaviour. As sadistic as the domestic violence mentioned in the article.
Which Tory did this, committed this crime against the people ....
Did the minister running the DWP actually sign his name to this sanction ...?
It beggars belief ....

This crime is the inevitable result of the changes to benefits introduced by the Minister.
He cannot wash his hands of the damage by pointing to the civil servant's signature on the letter.
Any civil servant who did not comply with the rules would be in trouble.

Re: The Brutality of the Torys
When Cameron became PM he and Osborne cooked various phrases demonizing the poor and the sick and those who lost their jobs, often as a direct result of his government's policies.
'Workers and shirkers"
Seeing your neighbours' curtains still closed when you went to work.
He ligitimised this language so people accepted that if you were out of work you must be a scrounger.

+1 to the previous wo posts.
The problem is a callous system engineered by a callous and failed government headed by the two worst Prime Ministers in living memory, and the most incompetent cabinet ministers working for those PM's.
The result is a deeply divided nation that's bringing out the very worst in society.

Re: The Brutality of the Torys
What is IDS's take on this .... i'm not a Tory, never have been, but this is surely not an actual policy.
"Punish the Poor" never turned up in a manifesto i'm sure.
How do these rules come about, who wrote them ?
And, more importantly who carries them out ?
"I was only following orders " ??
Surely we have not descended to that again ................

Re: The Brutality of the Torys
There is another thread on this part of the forum that is about the Peterloo massacre (200 years ago). Make no mistake, those who purport to be leaders- who have segregated themselves from normailty and erected class and financial barriers to prevent social mobility and control the proletariat- have no empathy with those they see as different and would be quite happy to return to such conditions as underpinned Peterloo. The ruling classes - as the royal family- have always known just how far they can go. And they are making the world more unjust, more unfair, more unreasonable and more difficult for most of us each and every day.

And this has to apply to all "leaders" of whatever political party or belief, as recent events have shown all those that say they represent the people represent only themselves ,,,,, all are tainted .... but, catch-22 applies.
MP's of all parties see themselves as the ruling class in this country .... there is no way out of it .... even anarchists have leaders .....

Universal Credit has been introduced on a rolling programme not due to complete until 2023.
In spite of plenty of evidence of it causing privations ever since it began to be introduced, the Government has continued to press on.
