Food isn't taxed. Confectionery is. Eating in restaurants is. Food isn't.

As for other live essentials, ask any woman about the VAT on sanitary products.
You then have the anomaly that printed books are not subject to VAT but digital versions are.

I have no doubt at all that the VAT rules are full of anomalies, and i don't intend to defend the tax system. But food - as in proper food, not luxuries - is not taxed, which was the claim.
