You lived on a railway line?
You were lucky!

We lived in a shoe-box in the middle of the road ........................

Looks like a narrow gauge railway, difficult to tell from the perspective, with a crossing ahead and possibly an electric substation on the right judging by the telegraph poles, and the shadows suggest the hills are looking towards the west but depends on the time of day when the photo was taken.

Two lines suggests a main line.

I doubt that it is Wales.

So that leaves Scotland. Which I don't know very well at all.

Standard gauge double track* non electrified
* or a passing loop, maybe somewhere below Black Combe
Or the WCML before electrification? Or the S&C?
Looks a bit like the view north from Harlech

You could have put a train in the picture to give us a clue
