The challenge here is to find a place where the rail line points across flat (estuary / coastal) land towards mountains. The southern edge of the Lake District does seem likely but I can't find those mountain tops on Streetview so far.

Also, either the photographer was trespassing on the railway, or he was standing on a level crossing.

I agree. I thought it was looking across to the 'old man' possibly from the crossing over to Dunnerholme above Askham.
Pointing the right way and a footpath ( the white stiles further along) crosses it further up.
Those electric poles are beating me unless they’ve been replaced with pylons since the picture?

From memory looks a bit like Foxfield where you have to cross the tracks. Duddon estuary?

You have it spot on.Hills are the Coniston fells from Brown Pike,centre,onto Dow crag and,behind to the right,Coniston Old Man.Well worked out.
