Infrared laser thermometers

Post by mercalia »

I am thinking of getting one to test temperatures of electrical componants. Any one have one here, how accurate are they and does the laser beam really select the spot to be tested?

There's divergence between the laser and the spot being measured.
The only one I've seen was fairly expensive and essentially was a focused IR detector with the laser mounted fairly close so it was pretty good.

For your purpose would a thermal camera be better?
They're not cheap but you can simply look at the item and see where the hotspots are.
I've used them for spotting overheating components on circuit boards and/or wiring and even finding where the pipework for my heating runs in the walls.

The ones that overlay a visual image are pretty good and to an extent hide the low resolution thermal camera.
(They too suffer from divergence).
