Brits abroad have a tendency to be expats rather than immigrants. They send their children to the British School and live in the expat community. They go to the Anglcan Cathedral and the Country Club where locals wait on the.

Hyperbole? Possibly. But most will know what I mean.

I can recognise it, especially in the like of engineers in Dubai or bankers in Qatar, but plenty of British people lead ordinary lives in other European countries with no country club or English church (l never knew of either in six years in Germany). And many of our emigrants go to Anglophone countries anyway where they don't look for that type of support.

Most British in Norway are living normal lives, and mostly integrating. They seem to have more problems with the language than immigrants from many other countries, but they send their kids to local schools and join local clubs. There are some British get-togethers from time to time and groups in various places who socialise together. Our city, for example has a pub with some decent locally brewed beers and imported ales. One of the bartenders is Irish, so there's a loosely organised British/Irish evening there about once per month.

'Brits in Oslo' is a little more organised and have a Christmas do and support network for newcomers. But it's hardly the British enclave of Oslo.

There are 3 Anglican churches in Norway, and two other Anglican congregations that use Norwegians churches. Country Clubs are Norwegian. The most British clubs here are cricket clubs, and most of those are very international, with many players from India, Pakistan, and Australia, and other countries, as well as Great Britain and Ireland.

Stavanger is the only place in Norway that has a British school, and that is largely because of folks who came to work in oil & gas industry. While it was mostly British children 30 years ago, it is now basically an international school, and they are working on IB certification.

Of all of the British I know here (and there are quite a few), none fit the description of the British ex-pat above. IMO, it is a dated concept, limited to retirement enclaves and ex-pat work contracts in host countries that present particular hazards or cultural issues.

Isn't is odd that some British people claim that the UK is such an awful country that they are considering a move to the EU (though nearly all of them won't go anywhere) while many thousands of EU nationals in the UK are very keen to stay here and want assurances that they will be allowed to?

Perhaps these two groups can get together to exchange views.

Also it is odd that Remainers who tell us that post-Brexit Britain will be absolutely terrible are strongly in favour of those EU nationals being allowed to stay to share in the misery, poverty, xenophobia, racism, food poisoning and Victorian working conditions which they say awaits the UK's residents.

Perhaps you are, again either assuming too much or missing the point, in that those that may be planning to leave the UK may have been doing so for some time.

And I am ashamed that pre-Brexit Britain already displays/has/enjoys those traits which you ascribe to post-Brexit Britain.

It's not that interesting.
He's posted more or less the same many times before.
It's more or less the whole repertory.

And it's not strictly factual, in that permanently moving to and living in the EU will not be so easy (for most) in the near future, if things go as expected.
Ireland may well be an exception because of older agreements.

A fair few EU residents in the UK ARE leaving I think. As jobs finish here.
I guess they don't feel that welcomed by some sentiments as expressed around the place.
It's not always so nice living somewhere amongst perceived hostility.
The weaker pound is a factor too.
As is uncertainty.
Reciprocal health care is a big and expensive area too.

It is far too early to know for sure about much that will or could happen.
Johnson and the rest need to get back from Mustique first. ((The name from the French because of the mosquitoes ))

As an aside I quite fancy a small wager that Johnson will not be PM on New Years Eve 2021.
Based on his performance as FS, a poor simplistic style of oratory and the highly complex economic and political difficulties he faces.

My wifes brother retired from the MOD at 55.
He and his wife sold their house in Swindon and moved to Cyprus.
The good life, 5 course kebabs and gallons of cheap wine ....

At 68, at the first sign of expensive medical requirements, they sold up and moved to Pontefract to get access to the NHS ....

I never bet big money on the uncertain. Too many factors. Not a betting man really. But a small flutter is ok.
I had been thinking about Johnson, and I came to that conclusion.

And it's actually quite a bit of money for me, there's no money in small scale "green" stuff. But it's the feel good factor that's important(to me)!

Bet accepted. Whatever he is, or says, Johnson appears to achieve long-held aims. I don't think he'll be squandering an 80 seat majority in the next two years. But even a week is a long time in politics.

We've certainly got misery, poverty, xenophobia and racism now as have most other countries. Just what is your point?
