At present the country has never been under more state control since 1945. This Tory Government has implemented more Socialism than the entire Labour Party since its' conception combined.

If it continues too long the UK will be hamstrung back to the 18th century. The working classes will revolt and the middle class will have their faces rubbed furiously in the reality. The wealthy will survive a while longer before a multitude of pitchforks tap at the door.

Incompetent ? Yes - Testing wasn't taken seriously from the beginning - they didn't get the public health mandarins under control.
They made promises that they had no idea were deliverable - 25,000 tests a day - nice round figure plucked out of the air.
Talk of "herd immunity" when they had no idea if it could be acquired.
Liberal quotes of meaningless numbers "197 million pieces of PPE have been delivered to the NHS"
Offers of help from industry ignored or declined.
One certainty - the incompetence will lead to more deaths than need have been.

Liars ? Well they are politicians - they are not generally prepared to give a straight answer to a question and will obfuscate or will give a long rambling answer to a question that wasn't asked.
Hancock has come up with a new figure of 100,000 tests a day - that's a nice round number - is he lying?

Usually the politicians promises turn into aspirations.

I know it is against the grain for some of us, but this is not a situation best addressed with the usual party political stuff. At the start of this I had two basic requirements of the Government, and they would have been the same whatever party they belonged to. One is that they spend as much as it takes, and the current lot have proved willing to do that. And second, that they hand over the tiller to public health experts. Again, they have done that. If anyone believes the crisis could have been handled better, with a different strategy, I suggest they direct their criticism primarily at Public Health England, who have led this campaign.

When all this is over there will be a reckoning, with a lot of difficult questions to answer. For the politicians there will be questions about whether the NHS was strong enough at the start, or whether austerity had weakened it unacceptably. But now is not the time for that. At this moment it is an indulgence that does not help. We need to focus on working together doing all the little things we can to help ourselves, our friends and family, and our neighbours, and park the party political bickering for a while.

My wife was out shopping for us, my elderly mother, and two sets of vulnerable neighbours yesterday. She had to explain at Tesco why she was buying so many loaves  But the staff could see she had four shopping lists so were happy to let her proceed. Testing times reveal people as they really are, and I'm proud of her.

They didn't hand over the tiller to public health experts - they handed it over to the civil servants in charge of public health England.
They should have kept much more focus on what was happening particularly as there were warnings being raised from many sources in health, science and industry.

Well done your wife.

I was thinking of the likes of Chris Whitty (CMO) who is an epidemiologist. That is what I mean by "an expert", the sort of person I want steering policy at the moment.

This isn't a party political thread but a telling it like it is thread, and personally I think now is the time to discuss the government's failings which are many and varied, and over a long period of time,I include New Labour in that tally.
Such failings need to be kept to the forefront of our minds because as sure as eggs is eggs the politricians in charge, after the dust settles will do their utmost to sugar coat their dismal failings during this grave time in our history with even more lies and deceit. They have NO excusses, they were warned and they ignored the warnings.
The past 30 years has left this country vulnerable and produced a wide divide between rich and poor,a divide that's totally unacceptable in a modern democracy such as ours.Politics and politicians have by their own hands gone from knee height to something smelly that sticks to the bottom of an ordinary wo/man's shoe!
The NHS,education system, and police force have been decimated particularly in the past ten years,NHS is pot luck, higher education turned into a business, along with a post code lottery for schools.
As I posted earlier South Korea did all the right things early on in this pandemic and as a result will come out of it least scathed, whilst from a position of weakness brought on by poor government over a long period the UK will suffer worst for not doing what it should've done earlier.
I will do my utmost to help anyone I can through this, but with my wife suffering from Parkinson's which manifests as physical weakness, mental slowness, anxiety and depression my help will be limited and primarily to her wellbeing, but I will not stop calling out failure and incompetence in government when and wherever I see it!

It's often said we get the politicians we deserve I'll leave that for someone else to decide if we deserve better!

Doing what a good neighbour would,she's a gem :)

It shouldn't or needn't be about tearing each other apart but about calling out abject failure in poor government action in the face of a pandemic.

And yet only a few weeks ago the country was voting in a party with a recent history of freezing wages, expelling (non British) workers, cutting posts, etc.. When we don't need them and we put in place (through votes) cuts treating these people like dirt and suddenly "crisis" and we are all singing their praises - but do they deserve our admiration for their work and care or for hanging-on-in -there whilst those we elected treat them like dirt.

If I read my O.E.D. correctly the word "Trot" is a work denoting the pace that a horse may travel at, others being walk, canter, gallop.
But you obviously overlooked the possibility of me using the commonly known word in such sense?
I have of course suffered serious bowel movements in the past, so a "Touch of the Trots" has passed my lips. Whether that is "Regular" or "Irregular" is open to question  .
Always keep an eye open for elephant traps in my posts! Also Virtual Custard Pies  . TTFN MM

You know as well as I do that you didn't use it in that sense. Stop dissembling.

Thanks,it's appreciated.

It's those self righteous individuals who know nothing about anyone else's private life but choose make such pointed comments as
Just pack in bleating and get out there and do something good!

that I have little time for.
