I also do not understand the point of smart phones. I've got a dumb phone and most of the calls I make are to my bank when they have refused a payment on my card (I'm sure everybody in India now knows my mother's maiden name).
Should public houses insist on contactless and ID they will not be getting my custom.
I have found the automatic tills in supermarkets very useful as they still take cash (sucking 20's out of my hand disconcertingly quickly).
As a digression I recently bought a garden trowel (with cash) and it is a restricted item - have there been gangs of youths terrorizing the citizenry with garden trowels recently?

Keep life simple suits me, though I do get forced into buying newer toys, as the TV people shrank the captioning on screen I had to get a larger model :(
So ruddy difficult to get the thing functioning, can't say I'm in control of it? Common theme these days. MM

Being in the modern world I have complete control of the size of the subtitles on my devices.

Camera obscura - pinhole camera.

The C5, having ridden one, is actually quite good, just 30 years ahead of its time in materials and battery technology. Or should we all drive multi tonne vehicles around at 35mph past school gates?
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

The concerns about sitting so low in traffic would be just as big an obstacle for an updated C5 brought out today as it was for the original. Which may well be why you don't see a modern equivalent. It doesn't matter much whether those concerns would be justified, because they would be there all the same and they would hamper sales.

Surely someone in the shop would have offered to take her cash and pay with their card - I certainly would have done??????

Get used to it, because cash is now seen as dirty. I was using contactless more and more even before the Covid crisis, but now I have a load of cash that I am amassing until I can go and bank it, not actually using the stuff for shopping anymore. And in most things I see myself a Luddite, resistant to change.

Well PWA, If you think that we should all follow the rush to cashlessness, without us having freedom of choice how would you like it if your own choices were limited against our wishes?
You should not be allowed to purchase bicycles, no way, a tricycle is the only machine you will be permitted to use!
If you wish to avail yourself of a motor car for your use then maybe you should be compelled to use a Lada 1200, good enough in the land of the not so free.
Oh yes, you must be forced to return to a 12" Baird TV, minimum needs met!
You want freedom, well so do I. When we have reliable, established technology, proven to both work and be secure, then maybe I will begin to have trust in measures to benefit us all. But that sounds like Utopia, which won't keep the dosh rolling into the coffer of the Techno Pushers will it?

I would not seek a ban on cash, but I observe that it is on its way out. And it won't be long before cash transactions form a small minority of purchases and demanding that cash be accepted everywhere will be a bit like demanding that credit cards are accepted everywhere. If you wish to rely on cash you are likely to be left high and dry. It won't be this year but it could be as soon as five years from now. Hastened by shop owners reluctant to fill tills with cash they have to bank at the end of the day at branches that are further away than they used to be.

You still haven’t said why you think a prepaid contactless card is less secure than cash...

Not convinced that’s the only restricting factor. They need to be sufficiently well designed to be trendy.

You could make something lighter now, and include a crash structure.

The lotus Elise doesn’t suffer from poor sales as a result of being low in traffic.

I well remember how the C5 was received and the fact people were sat so low and exposed was a big factor in the poor sales. The media made a lot of that, and probably would again.

I saw an Elise yesterday and it didn't seem to me to be as low as a C5.

Hello (XAP)Bob, WE have been with this bank for over 50 years, so we rightly expect them to keep providing a service that suits our needs.
We don't trust or want Contactless cards, our account has always been in good order, so we truely expect to receive a service that suits us.
as our phones are not the pay and throw away kind, with card only plan, we don't have to keep topping them up.
We have used the signature type card which the bank provided us with. When the newer type of cards came into use we chose Chip & Signature over Chip & PIN, suits my issues.
So just why do you think we should lay hands on top-up debit cards, they would be just another level of phaff!
You like Contactless, fine use them, we don't so why should people like you think we should be compelled to use such things.
As we see it if our cards are issued by the banks why should any trader try to vry the terms and conditions which they have signed up to with the Electronic Point of Sales Authority?
We have never had any issue over being overdrawn with our account, so we think that should be enough.
Of course we may not be in possession of a "Credit Score", but as we have no debts, no mortgage, no liabilities that should be enough.
So go and play with your own toys. MM

MM

Are you able to say why you don't trust contactless? I agree it's up to you but I am interested in reasons which at present aren't too clear.

There's a big hype about RFID protection in wallets, cardholders and passport holders. AIUI technically it's possible to skim cards remotely that way but practically it would get you noticed and is a lot more trouble than other, safer and cheaper ways. I know a guy at work who's checked out part of the black web out if interest in how to do it. He's a little bit of a computer nerd. He told us about some of the things he saw from porn(we think that's the real reason he went on it) and identity information being sold. He could have got a handful of such information for a tenner but AIUI you pay a little more to get the identification information of people who have been scammed before.

So IMHO there's more profitable ways to defraud people than defrauding then through contactless means. Of course there's always tampering with ATMs going on so who knows if getting cash is any safer?

The only thing you are saying, and it’s getting tedious, is that you don’t want to carry something the pub will accept as payment.

Cash will return, but the current situation is that we are trying to restrict the number of things handled by retail personnel, since they would have the potential to further transmit any infection to hundreds of others in very short order.

Your objection to contactless cards seems to be purely that you object to them. You haven’t come up with one reason they are worse than cash - and you’ll never be hunting for exact change again.

If you must use cash don’t go to a pub. Everyone is happy. If you want to use a pub then use a contactless device. It’s not all that difficult.

It is if anything safer than cash - if your wallet gets stolen phone up the bank and the cash in your wallet is automatically disabled, and you get keep it, not the ne’erdowell who half inches it.
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

I had the same last twenty note in my pocket for most of lockdown. I really haven't used cash. However family members have posted cash to our son and he's used it. Well, I used contactless and took the note off him to sit in my wallet unused. If I get anything costing exactly £10 I'll use it just to get rid of it. That's highly unlikely considering everything is 99p at the end.

AIUI Norway and Sweden are going very heavily towards cashless society. It be would be interesting for a collection of Norwegian old duffers to meet MM and discuss switch over to cashless and contactless society. I'm sure there probably had resistance for be awhile them got over it.
