No, not in this way. A impromptu demolition like that could have injured someone, and there are constitutional ways of getting statues removed.
I approve of the view that Colston was not a fit person to be celebrated with a public statue, but it would be perfectly practical for the local council to have it safely removed by a contractor in due course.

The reeport states that the statue was then drsagged through the streets and thrown into the River Avon. The river is not a rubbish tip and an object that large could become a hazard to boats. Either the local council or the harbour authority will probably have to go to some expense to remove it: probably a lot more expense than if it had been left lying where it fell.

They’ll get theirs. SARS-CoV-2 is a very nasty customer. These protests are the epitome of a ‘super spreader event’. There will be a second wave of Covid-19 deaths as a result, we’ll all be back in lockdown by the end of the month. Then the ‘protestors’ will be about as popular as a fart in a spacesuit.

its pathetic. The people should be identified and prosecuted - i think it is a grade 2 listed monument. Hypocracy? The town and citizens benefited from his wealth that he donated after his death to charity? Any descendants should do an account of the conequences of the mans charity and demand it be given back ( with interest)

An example. Some thing similar happened to the uni in Johannesburg south Africa where the students voted to remove a statue of Cecil Rhodes that great Bristish Imperialist. Yeh.......But one thing they didnt do is to return the land the uni campus is built on to any descendants - C.R donated the land to the uni     Such hypocracy?

It's quite possible the protester and the NHS worker is one and the same.

Don't know Bristol well but I have read of Colston, there have been many discussions and consultations about removing the statue, renaming streets, but next to nothing was done, just more blathering
Hope this wakes the authorities up
Reminds one of 1989 in eastern Europe, +1

I should not join such a protest, I am not a herd-animal

And they are suffering disproportionately from Covid for the same reasons they are protesting.

The Council have had plenty of "due course" to take down the slaver's statue.
Colston's money with which he was so generous was made of the back of black slaves, just as the land Rhodes gave was taken from its owners.
These protestors (why does protestors need inverted commas?) owe nothing to Colston or Rhodes, quite the reverse. It is not hypocrisy.
They are angry enough to act rashly because this seems to be an occasion when they can express their resentment of racism.

Isn't it a blooming shame?

Are you really so silly?
If you think that Colston was not a slaver, say so, and justify it.

Edited to add: are you Donald Trump?

So what? So what!
Is it usual to return stolen money to the thief, even without interest?
Maybe the money should go to the descendants of the people whose labour and suffering made it for Colston?
The city should have taken down the statue years ago, it is the least they could do.
