Moth ID

Postby reohn2 » 17 Jul 2020, 8:14pm

Can anyone identify this moth?
I looked through my two moth books and can't find a match.
The timber on is 150mm (top to bottom in the photo)which is a gauge to it's size:-

Its the open wallet moth, sorry couldn't resist.

However it looks similar to an Old Lady Moth

Old Lady Moth (Mormo maura)
The Old Lady Moth is a large heavily built moth with a wing-span of 55-65mm, sometimes larger. Widespread across the UK and seen flying in July and August. Caterpillars overwinter and emerge in spring to feed on Blackthorn and other shrubs.
At the last count:- Peugeot 531 pro, Dawes Discovery Tandem, Dawes Kingpin, Raleigh 20, Falcon K2 MTB dropped bar tourer, Longstaff trike conversion on a Falcon corsa. :D
