If its a plastic/landfill reduction you want, Double edge razors last a lifetime, collecting them up you can recycle the blades you can get blades in cardboard boxes and Astra being an example.
A good soap rather than tubs or aerosol. My current soap has lasted 18 months shaving ~5 times per week. And the refill comes in a cardboard box

I had a look at the prices of some of them - £100+ for a razor "You Must be joking" to quote some one

But amortise that cost over a lifetime, compare it with the cost of disposable blades...

It’s economics a la Commander Vimes

Nice reference....

How about beards? Save time, reduce your heating bill, grow your own antibiotics on your face and have a warmer face while cycling in the cooler weather....
....and perhaps even gain employment as Father Christmas (covid19 restrictions may apply).

I see Ebay you can still get them. SO any one here use one or have used one? DO they do a good job? And how on earth do those leather strips sharpen the blade - dont make sense to me

I use a cut throat razor (straight razor) daily. It's already been explained what a strop it's for. I use a finishing stone to refresh the blade every so often.

I also use what you call "silly ones" they are called shavette. I own a Feather Artist Club SS and a DX and I love them both.... you do have to buy the blades but you get 10 to 15 shaves per blade so between 3 to 5 pence per shave.

It takes about 100 shaves to master a straight razor, after the first 20 shaves you might be able to get good shaves but a little slow.

I'd suggest a straight razor if you want to learn straight razor shaving. Be aware that some of those sold on ebay are useless, it's better to look for old ones in good condition and shave ready.

Woe, Tis Woe, Shaving is horrible, causes skin issues with infected follicles!
Growing a beard also causes skin issues!
Short of taking the Duncan Goodhew route, which ain't fool proof, I will have to keep enduring both issues until I turn my toes up?
We haven't even touched the cost of styptic pencils? MM

Hi MickF :D , But the difference is that Duncan achieved his hairless condition by taking a header out of a tall tree!
Maybe a softie like me would need wizardry to pull of the solution? IGICB MM

I think that is probably where you need to be for a good quality one, If you buy cheap it will be useless. I am not an expert on cut throat razor, but knives are the same you get carving knives for £10 or less but if you want something you can put an edge on, you are in the £50 plus region.

HIs DE stuff is in the right ball park with razors from 7 to over 100 last time I looked

He lost all his hair after falling out of a tree, but it was AFTER, not becuase.

I lost all my hair by degrees.
Brown hair, and then started with alopecia errata in the 1980's and as it grew back it grew back white.
I had white patches for years, and the white seemed to "migrate" from the back and up the sides, and eventually I was white up both sides but brown on the top.
Further along the years, the brown turned white, and became thin.
Further still, it all slowly disappeared top and sides.

Eventually, last haircut 25 Jun 15
Last shave winter 2015.
Winter 2015, very little body hair.
First to go were leg hairs and arm hairs.
Last to go, pubic hair, underarm hair and chest hair - very very thin and white before the last went.
Autumn 2016, totally smooth skin over whole body. No visible hair follicles anywhere.

........... still the same now, and it's brilliant!!!!!!! :D
Why anyone wants hair, I will never know.

Duncan Goodhew fell out of a tree when he was aged 10, it was a traumatic event which triggered alopecia.
If I ever turned into a slap head I'd have to get a wig! Still I'm 58 in October and not gone grey yet, great to have a proper shave everyday and splash a bit of Brut on!

There is no evidence that trauma causes alopecia though people like to think it has.

It's an auto-immune response. Nothing to do with trauma.

Tree lost all its leaves, too.

There are many types and causes of alopecia.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hair_loss

Alopecia areata, which I think is what you were describing, typically has an autoimmune component.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alopecia_areata

Traumatic alopecia is very well described, but it's caused by the trauma of 'hair care" rather than head injury.

But on the razor issue maybe h should seek out a better quality safety razor and good quality blades?
I've just lashed out on a new Merkur on and decent blades, the Bic plastic one gives me issues.
So rather than cut to the chase, I may chase to the cut. Styptic Pencil at the ready. MM
