Breaking International Law
Re: Breaking International Law
The Court of Appeal1 today refused a renewed application for leave to issue judicial review proceedings against the decision of the Prime Minister to sign the EU Exit Withdrawal Agreement including the Ireland/Northern Ireland Protocol. The appellant (“JR83”) was a 62 year old grandmother who lives in Northern Ireland near the border with the Republic of Ireland. She is concerned about the consequences of a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland as she regularly crosses the border.

DUP:
"If in the final analysis those who are democratically elected by the people of Northern Ireland lack the power to prevent such checks, and the protocol issues remain, then the position in office of DUP Ministers would become untenable.
"Let me be clear: if the choice is ultimately between remaining in office or implementing the protocol in its present form, then the only option for any unionist Minister would be to cease to hold such office.
"Our political institutions will not survive a failure to resolve the problems
"I say not as a threat, but as a matter of political reality that our political institutions will not survive a failure to resolve the problems that the protocol has created.
"Neither will they survive an indefinite ‘stand still’ period; urgent action is needed."
Responding to the comments, a spokesman for Boris Johnson - who signed off the arrangements as part of his Brexit deal - said:
“I think this illustrates the real pressure the protocol is causing in Northern Ireland and the lack of cross community support for the current arrangements.
“We believe that the challenges the DUP and others have set out illustrate that the protocol in its current form is simply not sustainable.”

And it wouldn't exactly hurt if the SoS complied with domestic law:

"Between April 2020 and March 2021, the Secretary of State failed to comply with his duties under section 9 of the 2019 Act, in that he failed to ensure expeditiously that the State provide women in Northern Ireland with access to high quality abortion and post abortion care in all public health facilities."

Johnson makes promise to DUP that he will tear up the protocol:
https://www.theguardian.com/politics/20 ... SApp_Other
Of course, these are the people to whom he promised that there would be no GB/NI border. If they believe him they are as perfidious as he is.
Does the DUP actually represent anyone anymore?

Re: Breaking International Law
The trouble is that Johnson makes so many promises that are broken, I'm sure the international politicians are more aware of the list than I am but what can they do except mourn the state of UK politics and try to achieve something/anything (if only for a short time).Oldjohnw wrote: ↑14 Oct 2021, 6:08pm Johnson makes promise to DUP that he will tear up the protocol:

And Johnson just ruffles his hair, adopts his "lovable fool" persona and fathers a few more children (with a few more lovers).
