Recent washing machines have dispensed with the ability to have a hot water fill. They use less water so it's simpler to have a cold fill only. Hot fills usually means draining the pipework of the hot water gone cold so as they use less it's not necessary any more. We use the 30 min cold fill cycle 2/3 times a week. Everytime I purchase a box of washing detergent the instructions say to use less than previous. Is the detergent getting better at cleaning. I can also now cope with biological washing powders which previously brought me out in a rash.
At the last count:- Peugeot 531 pro, Dawes Discovery Tandem, Dawes Kingpin X3, Raleigh 20 stowaway X2, 1965 Moulton deluxe, Falcon K2 MTB dropped bar tourer, Rudge Bi frame folder, Longstaff trike conversion on a Giant XTC 840 :D

I don't think so.

As a broad generalisation we use more detergent/soap than is needed to remove grease in all sorts of domestic cleaning.

Washing bin usually has some in it, and we do washing may three times a week. Very efficient machine on a cold-water supply and 30mins wash. Dries outside on the line, or over the kitchen range.
Do you think that you're using more water, energy and soap/ detergent than you would if you were washing underwear rather than outerwear?
No.
There's other stuff besides clothes to wash.

As for detergent, we us less than an egg-cup of liquid per load. Machines and detergents are FAR MORE economical and efficient that they used to be and use less water too.

Plus, our water is very soft.

In a tweet, the Health Secretary has just accused those who continue to exercise caution around Covid of “cowering”. His exact word.

Disgraceful.

Cowering?
As opposed to standing up in the trenches and smoking?

Of course we’re cowering, they’re randomly shooting automatic weapons around the country.
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

Take no offence, and I am no particular lover of politics or politicians but come on, I hardly think he actually accused people of cowering.

It was a bit of alliteration, ;cowering from Covid', probably thought it had a nice ring to it.

I think the media can whip a lot of us into misplaced hysteria.

Now I'll duck down to avoid the flack!!

I think that it's stupid and dangerous language.

Nonpharmaceutical interventions are still very important in reducing harm and deaths, and using them isn't a sign of weakness.

I might be wrong but I assume the word was chosen carefully - his Spads will have considered the likely effect.

I take no offence personally. I am used to this government exceeding the previous low continually.

He divided people into those who just carry on regardless and those who act cautiously. And cower and coward have the same route.

And it wasn’t the media: it was the families of victims.

Even Government seem to accept that Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions (NPIs) work (social distancing, masks, etc.). So in making NPIs voluntary and passing the onus onto individuals as a personal decision, so the less responsible will be taking more freedoms and spreading pandemic whilst the more responsible will continue with a more restricted life and not be spreading pandemics. Are they "rewarding" the right behaviour?

"I still don't care about anyone else dying, but apparently that's not good PR. Go out and spread the virus, kill granny and anyone else even remotely vulnerable, as well as tens of thousands of others - we can really finish off the NHS, then I can sell it through a shell corporation I own"

I am glad that the S of S has removed his tweet and apologised.

I am troubled that he did this in the first place. We all make comments on the spur of the moment which are rash, ill-thought through and under pressure for an immediate response. Our choice of words is often regretted.

I would understand the S of S if he had been in a tv or radio studio or if he were responding to an insistent question posed by a journalist.

But when you tweet you are in charge. It is your choice of words and you have time to consider them. There is no urgency or requirement for immediacy. In a tweet you particularly have to choose words careful because (a) they are public and (b) their quantity is limited so every word has to count.

Javid selected his words. He would know full well what they meant and he should know that as the person having responsibility for the nation’s health his words matter.

He has let us down and further undermined any residue of trust.

I admit I assumed he was sending a message to the Libertarian faction - perhaps I misjudged him.

If it was unintentional it was extraordinarily careless.
