Yes. Typical populist absence of policy. And that was true with this summer's announcement apart from the last-minute changes before it got to Parliament.Debs wrote: ↑24 Nov 2021, 2:56pm The elephant in the room is the fact that this £86k is all about enabling people to keep their house to pass it on as inheritance, it doesn't answer the thorny issue of how the massive costs of care and/or nursing home charges will get paid, and who is going to pay it.

And, just down the corridor:

My concern as well. My understanding: Inadequate care, shortage of care workers, care workers on less than minimum wage, etc. - not addressed by Johnson's proposed changes. All Johnson has done is to protect the assets of the wealthy to allow large inheritances to be passed on.Debs wrote: ↑24 Nov 2021, 2:56pm The elephant in the room is the fact that this £86k is all about enabling people to keep their house to pass it on as inheritance, it doesn't answer the thorny issue of how the massive costs of care and/or nursing home charges will get paid, and who is going to pay it.
I'd hoped the priority would have been to get those in need the level of care a wealthy society should be providing. But all those issues mostly ignored and left to others to resolve later (and in the meantime those needing help are being let down).

Two little-known committees of the House of Lords have joined forces today to publish reports of fundamental constitutional importance.
Each committee panel of peers has summed up its concerns by giving its report a title that is uncharacteristically blunt:
Government by Diktat: A call to return power to Parliament is the report of the secondary legislation scrutiny committee, which examines at statutory instruments made by ministers under delegated powers.
Democracy Denied? The urgent need to rebalance power between Parliament and the Executive is the report of the delegated powers and regulatory reform committee, which considers whether bills give ministers inappropriate powers.

There is little hope for the poor and needy with the present government in charge,Johnson and his cronies care little for anyone but the rich and powerful.

I thought that Boris Johnson cared only about Boris Johnson, which is why there's currently grumbling from some of the rich and powerful, or their proxies like Lord Snooty.

I was just reading this about 1/2 hour ago and thinking nothing fishy there. Huge Tory donor, supporter of BJ is 'fortunate" enough to lease its premises in Newcastle for 25 years to HMRC and the company that owns the premises on his behalf is based in the BVI.Jdsk wrote: ↑25 Nov 2021, 11:31am "The deal will see officials at the government department responsible for preventing tax avoidance working from a site owned by a subsidiary of a company based in a secretive offshore tax jurisdiction."

Not that new - unless you're suggesting that he hasn't told any porkies since March 2020 ...PhilD28 wrote: ↑25 Nov 2021, 5:00pm A new catalogue of the lies told by the Prime Minister of the UK since 2019.

My understanding is that they've recently run a crowd funding campaign to put this website together using Peter Oborne's work up to March this year, the aim is to fund someone to track the ongoing lies and update this site regularly.DaveReading wrote: ↑25 Nov 2021, 11:53pmNot that new - unless you're suggesting that he hasn't told any porkies since March 2020 ...PhilD28 wrote: ↑25 Nov 2021, 5:00pm A new catalogue of the lies told by the Prime Minister of the UK since 2019.

A useful piece of work which is similar to what the Washington Post did to track Trumps lies.
I don't think anyone would suggest BJ hasn't told lies since March, as long as he is speaking there will be lies.
The interesting thing is that after fact checking they always challange the PM's office directly to explain his lies and give him the opportunity to refute them, to date they have not commented. Tracking and collating these lies is important to have the historical record and provide a resource to refute the oft repeated lies he utters.

I find Private Eye magazine an excellent source of info about many topics. They seems to have sources in every newsroom and eg in the current edition there's a blow-by-blow account of the events at the Daily Mail which saw Paul Dacre leave then return, while Geordie Greig left. In the previous (fortnightly) edition there was a special report on where some of the covid £ Billions went, and they generally mock Boris Johnson's antics.
There's always the threat of proceedings so they seem scrupulous about reporting people's explanations and seeking a response.
Plenty more besides including regular features about corruption in business, local and national government.
(No connection, other than having a subscription.)
