A horrible story from start to finish, especially reading that the deceased's husband found her body when he became concerned and went to search for her. I take no personal satisfaction from the assumption that the jury rejected his SMIDSY defence as incredible and I'd be the first to agree that nothing protects against drivers who are not looking.
Looking at the picture of the road where this happened, the speed limit is of academic interest, although the fact that he was only travelling at half the national limit for a road of this type gave him longer to see his victim had he been looking.
Although the link says he was to be sentenced later, this BBC report (with some graphic detail of the result of the crash) says he was jailed for two years and disqualified for five.
