Because we can confidently predict the dates on which infections rates will have got to levels when that could be considered a sensible thing to do...

A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.
There are two kinds of people in this world: those can extrapolate from incomplete data.

Having looked at some actual announcements the timings are “this is the earliest possible date”, although I have no doubt that certain imbeciles on green benches will wail and gnash teeth if the dates have to be pushed (which they inevitably will have to be, it’s just a question of whether they *will* be).

Nice gardens at a few pubs round here. Happy to sit outside, and have often done.
It's a pity that there are many pubs without garden or outdoor licenced areas.

These dates don't apply in Wales, but it will be a good day when our three local pubs can have at least outdoor customers. They act as community meeting places and a high proportion of the customers don't actually drink all that much. Food accompanied by a couple of pints is a common scenario, and you often see coffee cups on tables. It will be good to see locals nattering to people at nearby tables.

We should give pubs with no gardens roadside areas, like Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands have, at the expense of 3 or 4 car parking spaces, or even a redesigned road.

Seems to me that predicting pandemics and their progression is one skill that's been hugely developed in the last year or so.

People quoting the dates in the roadmap are completely ignoring that those dates are from those dates provided the data supports them. Any sign the pandemic is going the wrong way and they'll get pushed back. I see them all as we hope to dates but expect the actual dates to be a little later for each one.

Btw schools might be able to open on the 8th but that is still at the discretion of local authorities and head teachers. Local conditions could still push those dates back in places or even stagger class starts. No date is cast in stone.

As ardent supporter of the people free spaces, and lack of mixing, we have had during lockdown I am probably one of the few hoping the exit from this is delayed for a wee while more. I’d make a good hermit, as long as I had a half decent internet connection.

We’ll see what our FM announces later.

People were always going to quote the dates if they were given. If the dates are not fixed, they should not have been stated in that way. The headings should have been the data required to activate that step, with dates maybe listed as review dates, disconnected from the unlocking steps. If those dates are now missed (and I hope they are if needed, if the data does not support them), the Covid Recovery Group (CRG) of pro-death MPs will cause a heck of a lot of trouble and try to bully Boris into killing more than the predicted 30,000 more.

Anyway, here's Blackrock in Ireland showing how pubs and cafes with no outside space could be supported, if only our county councils were as forward-thinking:

Last summer our local pubs closed their small car parks off to make space for small marquees (with the sides removed) and picnic tables, and it worked quite well. This is one of the car parks that became a beer garden for a few weeks:

That's your opinion on presentation of this roadmap. However it's not been done in that way but as a kind of itinerary like a coach trip itinerary which if you've ever been on a coach trip you'll know those times are never achieved.

Imho the error is in the general population which is simply ignoring the details of the roadmap because it doesn't suit their desire to be free of this virus. You can't blame people for wishful thinking and turning a blind eye to details they don't want you read about. However the details are in the roadmap and selective reading isn't going to change the fact we do need to only carry out these reductions in restrictions when appropriate according to the data.

The Government can't win on this. If they do as they are doing in Scotland and don't give dates, they get criticised for not giving businesses enough notice of when to aim for. If they do give "at the earliest" dates they get criticised for prematurely raising expectations.

And there is another factor. Patience is wearing thin amongst people yearning to be set free. Many of us here are old codgers, but imagine if you were young again and had been restrained for over a year, unable to socialise properly or live the life you want to. They need hope in order to have the motivation not to break away right now.
