What bit of the vaccination campaign was outsourced to Uber? I missed that.markjohnobrien wrote: ↑7 May 2021, 10:30am We live in one of the richest countries in the world, bursting with entrepreneurial and scientific innovation, and there is lots to look forward to. Except that I have praised Johnson's "Gear Change" policy, among other things. He's still a liar and a racist who screwed up the covid response repeatedly, leading to tens of thousands of unnecessary extra deaths, and should not be our head of government in any reasonable reality.markjohnobrien wrote: ↑7 May 2021, 10:30am I realise a lot of people are blinded by hatred of Johnson and wouldn’t praise him if he rescued a puppy from drowning, but it cannot be a nice or healthy perspective to be steeped in so much negativity.

From my reading, and it was a while back, no, as it was different ships: we used frigates then as the navy was around three to four times bigger and we had the capacity. None of these silly defence cuts had occurred. Staggeringly, we used 22 frigates (and additional vessels) which is larger than the current RN.pete75 wrote: ↑7 May 2021, 5:32pmAre these the same lot who lost the Cod Wars with Iceland?markjohnobrien wrote: ↑7 May 2021, 10:44amThey are fisheries protection vessels: nothing more, nothing less. This fisheries protection squadron was put in place after the Cod Wars.
We didn’t lose operationally but Iceland threatened to pull out of NATO and deny NATO the use of an Iceland base: we buckled under the pressure.

I praised his vaccination programme. It doesn’t mean he is not an elitist, entitled liar or that his government is not corrupt. If it were a Labour, Lib Dem or Green leader I would say the same.mjr wrote: ↑7 May 2021, 5:43pmWhat bit of the vaccination campaign was outsourced to Uber? It was a reasonable gamble, and it has paid off.
The problem is that he can't even get boasting about it correct, you know what - something you touched didn't turn to faeces, celebrate it...
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

It wasn't a gamble. He banked on it. And it cost 150 thousand lives.

Such is Johnson's track record that if he rescued a puppy I would wonder who set it up and how much was in it for him.

Re: I don't like living in England....
And yet the Tories are still doing better than the honourable kier Starmer and his labour party. Anyone figure that one out yet? AIUI a labour majority of over 3500 in Hartlepool is now nearly a 7000 deficit. I guess he needs to stop his move to the centre and lurch left like big Len reckons.
The country's a mess right enough and IMHO the problem is less about Boris and more about an ineffective opposition that allowed for Boris to get where he is. As much as you might dislike Blair, Brown and probably Kinnock too. If they were leading the opposition since 2015, possibly 2010, I doubt you would have seen Boris even close to getting into number ten.
It's this focusing on Boris I find worrying. I think that is only letting HM's opposition off the hook. UK politics only really works if the two main opposing powers are keeping each other honest and on their toes. Under Foot Labour wasn't but Kinnock came in and started turning labour around I believe. Blair continued but perhaps went too far. However the two helped end the likes of millitant as a force in labour. Under Corbyn elements from the old millitant crowd got back into Labour despite officially having lifetime ban. But they're a side issue. IMHO unison and the big Union barons are now the big issue with Labour. I also think Kier Starmer could still be ok as leader of opposition but he needs to end the influence of the likes of big Len I reckon.
Obviously not many will agree with me here.

Re: I don't like living in England....
I'm originally Sunderland and still have plenty relatives down that area, it is a very similar place to Hartlepool and no one I know down there particularly likes Boris or the Tories, it is far more a case of their dislike of the modern London elitist liberal lefty Labour - Labour have nothing in common with the north east any longer, may be nothing in common with anywhere outside Islington. They may as well have Lilly Allan in charge, she would fit in very nicely on Labours top table.
Re: I don't like living in England....
There is no doubt at all that Johnson is good at elections. But regardless of which party is in power a country is better with an opposition which actually works.

Re: I don't like living in England....
Of course, that’s a given: Labour, however, are abysmal as an opposition and have lost their working class heartlands as they don’t speak for them anymore, have nothing in common, and are seen as a party for students, the middle class, and metropolitan socialists in big cities.
One of my best friends is from Newcastle and his cousin was a staunch Labour man who said he would never vote Conservative.
Due to his disgust with Labour and what he calls their “patronising clap trap” and obsession with far left causes, he has voted Conservative reluctantly since 2019. True of many, but these votes are conditional and when the electoral cycle turns, as it always does, he will return to Labour.
