It was superb
Gives us a little hint of what it will be like after a really serious event... I have long said that if we were deer (say), we'd have culled us by now. This is an unpopular, and given the last year or so, a potentially tactless view, but nevertheless, it's true...
Mine's this Wednesday.

There are two ways that getting vaccinated can slow the spread of the virus. First, it can help prevent you getting infected. Second, even if you are unlucky and catch the virus, it may reduce the risk of passing it on. It is crucial to understand how big these benefits are.

Two huge new studies have taken advantage of the successful UK vaccine rollout. An Oxford-ONS analysis of more than 370,000 survey participants found infections were reduced by 65% after a single dose. For protection against the virus, one dose was similar to having had a prior infection. There was no major difference between the two available vaccines.....

I am looking forward to my second dose on Thursday.
It's the same the whole world over
It's the poor what gets the blame
It's the rich what gets the pleasure
Isn't it a blooming shame?

Immunity has never been promised AFAIK.

And I don't know how having one jab was meant to make life better just like that. It needs a large uptake of both jabs.

So we should allow everyone to drive at 100mph through towns and ignore cyclist, because a few people would be killed anyway.

Yes - you still take precautions to further reduce the spread, but if you ever want those to lift then we need basically universal uptake of the vaccine amongst those who can take it.

I *can* and have had both jabs, but there is a very good chance that it has had no effect at all, so I still haven't gone into a building other than a shielded blood testing clinic or the vaccination centre since last February.
I haven't socialised with anyone in that time, more than having a couple of conversations through a window.

I've had both jabs. There has been no lift in lockdown in fourteen months - I have in fact moved to my parents house (and they went fully isolating for three weeks before I did so) on two occasions when the infection rates were volatile. Their house being in an area which has always had a very low rates throughout and is very easy to isolate in.

It wasn't until September that I left the house - that's seven months inside.

Your failure to spend forty minutes getting vaccinated (since you aren't yet vaccinated, despite having spent twenty minutes on the process so far), puts the entire process at risk.

Vaccination isn't purely to protect you, or to make your life easier or "normal". It is to protect society. Stop being such a selfish buttock and get the second jab.
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.
There are two kinds of people in this world: those can extrapolate from incomplete data.

England's third national lockdown ended on 29 March. I'm not aware of extra local restrictions in Sheffield. Some businesses must remain closed and gathering sizes are limited but not much else significant.

Plenty of evidence in the news over recent weeks that the vaccine is having a major impact, e.g. the article below.

BBC News website 21/04 - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-56826976/page/3
It appears that the first doses of vaccines have been having a dramatic effect on Covid infections.

Some 74,000 people were admitted to hopsitals with the virus in recent months, but only 32 who had had the vaccine, according to official data.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, one of the key scientists advising the government on Covid-19 says the results are "very good news".

Prof Calum Semple, of the University of Liverpool, says researchers looked "very carefully" at the hospital records of these 74,000 people and worked out how many had been admitted after vaccination started - 43,000.

They then identifed within that number just under 2,000 people that had received the vaccine, and examined how many days there were between receiving the vaccine and the onset of their symptoms.

How many people have been vaccinated so far?

"Most people admitted had caught their infection within a week on either side of vaccination and then there was a really sharp drop off in numbers, so that, after three weeks after being vaccinated, we could only count 32 people out of the 2,000 that had been vaccinated," he says.

Prof Semple stresses this is a "tiny number" - less than 2% - and says "that's just after the first vaccine and that's in the elderly population.

"It's really good real world data showing that this vaccine works and one dose works really well," he says.

Asked what this means for England's roadmap out of lockdown, he says plans should be able to go ahead if the vaccination rollout takes place on time, but notes "the problem is if further sections of society choose not to be vaccinated and then we get a further outbreak".

I’m wondering how you collect years of data if you don’t actually give people the vaccine.

Really? We still can't go inside pubs/cafes/restuarants/football stadiums/etc,etc,etc.I'm almost certain it will be the same where you reside? So we are still in a 'lockdown' of sorts are we not?
This is why I added 'of sorts' to that sentence.

rjb wrote:Swmbo and I had our Pfizer vaccinations at the same time at the start of february. Mrs had her booster 3 weeks later as she is on the vulnerable list. I have to wait for my 2nd but have an appointment booked in mid April, 12 weeks after the first.
Still no news on my second, but when my wife booked as a carer she got to book both appts...
Same here -- wife via local surgery so she got second date along with first -- mine via mass vaccine centre but when I looked at the card I was given at the centre after the first jab there was a time on but no date?

I rang the centre or booking hub. They said the date should be 10 weeks from the first date - just turn up at the same time as first jab was given - no need to book. That was early March.

Then a few days ago I checked on the hubs website -- HORRIFICATION! it says you have to book second jab ! ???

I'll ring again in case I got some numpty the first time I rang.

Got an email reminder / notification to get my second Pfizer jab on Thursday with the same time on as first jab -- so the "numpty" was correct and the system is working -- sorry numpty.
I am here. Where are you?

Side effects?

My arm ached for a day or so after the first jab, but no aches at all with the second.
Nothing else to report.

What you don’t actually realise is that you have been implanted with a Bill Gates micro chip!

Come off it. England's actual lockdowns barely qualified as lockdowns with few distance limits, almost no checking and fewer than 1 in 4 working from home. Indoor gatherings not yet being allowed is nowhere near a lockdown. If we had a lockdown, like France or Ireland, so many snowflakes here would go into meltdown!

Yes. The word lockdown does sometimes seem to get in the way of communication.

AFAICT many people in the UK do not understand that other countries have and had more stringent controls.
