Yes a another phone is a great idea but it's too much hassle carrying two phones about.
Buy a payg sim card - put a 10er on it and register the app on that. Then change back to your old sim and keep the payg sim in a safe place -- eg in your wallet - preferably on your person so you can reach for it if there's any need to get a text from the app to confirm id etc.
Dual SIM phone, shirley?

Forgot to mention that using different sim has the benefit that you can see when any of your contacts join up but your contacts won't see you join up to the app simply cos they haven't got your new number stored on their phone. You can fit your usual sim back in and still be able to use the app to stay in contact with the added bonus that you can send large pictures with ease and text as long as you need them to be -- like this one -- I'll stop now.

And today's the day that WhatsApp changes in the UK.

I strongly recommend that users check the new terms of service and the settings on their devices.

Short form: Use Signal.

Long form: Understand the changes to WhatsApp and the communications to which they apply and the communications to which they don't. If you decide to use WhatsApp check your settings, especially on sharing your address book and sharing data with Facebook. Then use Signal.

Jonathan

NB: This is now going to be introduced gradually so "I can't see any changes" doesn't mean that they aren't coming.

They'll have a limited amount of my contacts cos I only allowed the ones I used it to contact but it's off my phone some time ago but dear knows how many they really have -- Facebook is so invasive I believe it's a criminal offence what they are doing right now.

I suspect it gets a lot worse when you (or freind who gave them your details) also use Facebook as under the new regime they'll link a lot of other info about you e.g. one of your contacts (who has given them your contact info) is a member of a local football group so they mark you as a potential interest in football and be looking to other contacts to substantiate your interest. Or a contact is a member of a Facebook religious group or Facebook political group ...

And then a 3rd party takes your profile (with Facebooks best wishes on exchange of $$$) for use in targeting some vested interests ...

I think WhatsApp info being passed into Facebook broadens the profiles they can create massively.

Can someone explain farcebook to me, I wanted to look at something sent to me and it said I needed to sign in- after much disgust I thought ok an old mobile number and sign up and turn all the drivel and notifications off on an old device.
Then it tells me I need a desktop or messenger installed for an inbox, no thanks I don’t want that interaction.
Is it possible to read messages through an old iPad without installing messenger.

Also I keep getting something went wrong messages, only reason I joined was specialist info I wanted and it seems a pile of manure so far.

Conclusion a waste of time.

Facebook has various degrees of public/private user information. It all depends how it has been set up by whoever created the page or group.

The most public of setups can be accessed without even being signed up to Facebook. I know a few small businesses, mainly cafés, who use a public page as their sole "webpage". For a café it gives them an easy & free way to announce things - one does a "cake of the week" posting for example.

At the other extreme you can set up groups that are private & only members of that group can see the content. AFAIK you can even make them invisible so they won't be found by searches.

Chester & North Wales CTC have various pages & groups for publicising rides (public), discussing stuff/ giving useful info - local road closures & new cafés seem popular (group members, not necessarily Cycling UK member, only) plus private groups for ride leaders/organisers to share availability & routes, etc (private).

Of course, on the other hand, Facebook (& social media in general) can be pretty dire. My rule of thumb is not to read too many comments - you can usually tell in the first 5 to 10 whether they are going to be largely good/useful/funny or whether you are on the edge of a cesspit where it is best not to jump in.

You can use a generic web browser to access FaceBook, but not all of the functions will work.

FaceBook Messenger is an instant messaging system, which includes apps for various platforms:

I'm not sure if in "explain" you want to include the business model, what they do with information about you, the publishing of conspiracy theories and hate messages...

I’ve got an associate to save the page and send it to me, I just couldn’t see why you couldn’t read an inbox on Facebook without an instant messenger app installed on a device.

Presumably the something went wrong is related to all the settings turned off as don’t want anything other than to visit at a time of my choosing and read. If a message takes 3 days to reply- not bothered!

Instant notifications I find disruptive, looks like I will stop using WhatsApp soon as it keeps moaning to agree.

Facebook is like stroking the cat backwards, my brief look it is for vacuous narcissistic types looking for attention, sure there are some great groups and people- but not for me.

Must be getting old as things like tiktok are awful too.

I like message boards, don’t need real time replies of videos.

Sign-in requirement varies according to a number of factors. I'm not a "member", not registered but I do sometimes check a couple of pages (not crucial to my doing anything). Sometimes I'll get to view the pages fine, other times it will just ask me to log-in. When I'm asked to login I change to a different route to internet (i.e. get onto network from a completely different IP address, different provider) and often it will display the pages without the login. Sometimes it seems determined so I don't bother and when I next try (maybe an hour, maybe a day, maybe a week) it will work fine.

Sometimes I can display the page I'm after but switch to e.g. "Posts" and it will decide it wants me to login.

Not used their messenger so can't respond to that aspect.

Only pages I view are local clubs and not anything I need to see to avoid missing anything - it would take a lot more than I can currently image to make me register.

Bruceys are difficult to find on Facebook but Waynetta Slobs are in plentiful supply.

I had it under a completely false identity ( different phone payg etc ) for a few years just to stay in touch with two groups who abandoned their very useful website ( like this one ) but found it to be more and more useless as time went on so got rid of it some years ago.

The two groups have lost their individual identities since they have merged into the great collective.

The main problem I found with Facebook was that everything is in one long list of stuff -- ie there's no proper indexing of subjects like there is here, for example

Bikes & Bits -- Technical Section
On The Road
Family Cycling
Touring & Expedition

Facebook is all one list of dribble per group so to find any relevant information is a pain.

 Well I lasted all of a day or so, it keeps wanting a picture or verification warning- not buying not selling and 1 person I work with as a friend.

Seems you give all privacy to use Facebook- not happening

So that’s my Facebook experience over it seems and it won’t be missed.
