Name for residents of Wiltshire
On another current thread I directed a comment to residents of Wiltshire. As I was writing, I wondered if there was a collective term and when I googled it came up with Moonrakers.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonraker ... %20country.
That seemed so unlikely and also flippant in the context of the post that I didn't use it.
Out of curiosity, is the expression used and understood without explanation?

There's a film based on the same idea:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Moonraker
but I don't remember it having a connection to Wiltshire.

Re: Name for residents of Wiltshire
Some of my relatives are from it and I think it's occasionally used and widely understood by its residents, although most associated with people from the Devizes/Trowbridge centre of the county than Swindonians or Wiltonians/Salisburgers (OK, I guessed the last one). There's the flattering explanation as given in Wikipedia and also an unflattering one without the smuggling reason. I believe it's also not welcomed by Robins fans because it used to be a nickname for some other now-smaller team.thirdcrank wrote: ↑5 Oct 2021, 2:21pm [...] residents of Wiltshire. [...] Moonrakers.

I'd rate it as similar to "Yellowbellies", "Tractor Boys", "Tykes" and so on. It's widely-used but a bit slangy so not suitable for formal writing.

Chatting to a Geordie today.
He's from New Castle ............. note the words, and not Newcarsle.
We discussed Glasgow as he and I know the place well, and how it's not Glarsgow ...............but is Glasgow or Glasgie.
There ain't no R in Glasgow or Newcastle.

My Moonraker is in its original 1980 colours. The last owners of our new house moved in in 1982. This is reflected in a lot of brown -woodwork, t and g ceilings, skirtings and various bits of woodwork. Its all getting painted white.

Please, please don't change the colour of the camper. It's of it's time.
For certain that mix of colours will again be popular.
I had Raclet frame tent in those colours and loved it.
Re: Name for residents of Wiltshire
Yes thats exactly the way I feel about it. Since I have had it I have gradually been putting it back to its original state.francovendee wrote: ↑6 Oct 2021, 8:33amPlease, please don't change the colour of the camper. It's of it's time.

Newcastle is Nyu-cass-el. Always was. With the emphasis on the second syllable. Anything else is a different place.

Loads of Rs in both places. Especially ones who grumble about people pronouncing their city name in other accents.
