Cleaning dog pooh off tyres

Post by patricktaylor »

What's the best way to completely clean it out of the tyre treads? (bike kept indoors)

A regular task, and I've tried:
(1) Ride on wet lawn or wet road.
(2) Dry toothbrush.
(3) Wet toothbrush (favourite method).
(4) Matchstick.
(5) Twig.
(6) Washing up brush with bucket of hot water (see bucket, left).
(7) Jet hose, then wash bike down completely.
(9) Toilet paper.

[Can't use 8 - it puts a smiley in]

(8) - garden hose (while taking great care not to get in the way of ricochets!) for the most followed by (3) or (6) for the stubborn bits, followed by a quick hose-down of the wheels, frame, and mudguards.

Tomato ketchup.

I kid you not. This stuff is brilliant for removing the smell and grease of doggy do do. My mum and dad used to live in Maine in America, and they used this to even get off the stink of skunk after the dog got sprayed, and when the dog found a dead for ever deer and rolled in it, it worked for this too.

Use a good car shampoo, and with a srubbing brush apply with a good squirt of tomato ketchup. Leaves it all squeaky clean and smell free.

Make sure you rinse off well.

Personally dog muck is one of my pet hates. If I could find a way to wipe my tyres on the owner I would.

No matter how much I watch the road, I often find the stuff on my tyres, caked into the tread. I don't see why I should have to wet the whole bike each time though. The wet toothbrush is my chosen method, but even then, the muck can flick obstinately back onto your arm and elsewhere on the bike, so this is not the perfect solution. Why is it so incredibly sticky?

I will try the ketchup method next time (tomorrow, probably, and the day after that, Daddies Sauce).

That's going to get confusing - how will you know when the tyres are clean?

I've found that the wife's toothbrush used wet is excellent for shifting it out of a deep treaded tyre. A good quality butter knife is useful on off road tyres, then the toothbrush treatment.

Oh the luxury of dog poo!!!!!

my weekend ride is partly along shared pavement/cycle path /bridle way. Not too bad at this time of year but I hate autumn when the leaves are down and you really can't see what you're cycling through.

Aren't horses big?

Now there's a funny thing, I'll bet your wife says the same thing about your toothbrush and guess which knife she makes your sandwiches with ?

Ten times worse dealing with it on a wheelchair
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.
There are two kinds of people in this world: those can extrapolate from incomplete data.
