Waiting for the sun to melt the frost

Post by Mick F »

Is anyone else waiting?

It was very very cold last night, and I'm desperate to get on my bike and RIDE! I've been cooped up indoors since the weekend with stuff to do, and the weather is beautiful without a cloud in the sky and the winter sun is beaming!

It's still freezing cold though! I'll give it another half hour to warm up.

Our lane doesn't get direct sunshine and I'm worried stiff of slipping on the white stuff.

Went out on Monday, rode up the coast to South shields, then back through Co Durham into N Yorks, turning for home at Northallerton.

We had snow, clear sky with sunny spells, frozen rain, overcast sky with wind, hail stones and more snow.

Almost four seasons in one day except the temperature never climbed over 4 degrees and it felt colder.

We still enjoyed the ride after weeks of being 'grounded' :D

Rode to work in a blizzard this morning, it was fantastic! The snow was settling on the loose ball-shaped snow that fell last night. The Raleigh Maverick performed flawlessly, and I was completely unable to get the back wheel to lose grip, even by grabbing a big handful of drum brake only resulted in an unimpressive short slide. Wish I lived in Norway or somewhere a bit snowier than here

The ride was fantastic! :D
I braved the cold and frost, and gingerly made my way down the lane. Thankfully, where I turn left at the bottom, the sun was on the road, and off I went.

26 miles in the bitterly cold northeasterly wind, but fantastic nonetheless. Up through Tavistock and out onto the edge of Dartmoor to 1000ft odd, then down through Lydford village, and up again towards Brentor, then back towards home.

Down and down and down into the Tamar Valley, and it was freezing! Perhaps 2 or 3 miles of freewheeling into the icy air, I was glad to climb up the other side!

What was I wearing?
(Starting at the bottom  )
Thick socks inside my cycling shoes
Winter weight bib tights with shorts underneath
Two thermal vests on top of a Gore base layer
Thick fleecy LS jersey, zipped up to the top
Thick fleecy Maddison gloves
Gore skull cap, pulled down over my ears
Helmet

Was I warm?
Only just!

Glad you got out for your ride, no such luck as waiting for frost to dissipate, out at 05.30 for shift.

Thick Socks
Shorts
Longjohns
Longs
x 2 Helly Hansen vest
x2 Road jerseys
x 1 Ice Queen (ground effect windproof)
further Road jersey
x2 thin pairs of gloves
Ski Headband

Was warm enough, just!

Dawn was breaking as I got to work and the birds were chirping cheerfully.
Home against NE blow and a couple of short snow showers.

Here's the clobber that I wore for a (very careful) ride tonight on icy cycle tracks and then on wet roads.

A thick woolly hat

Two motorcyclist's neck tubes
Tee shirt
Thick thermal vest (M&S's best)
One pullover
Berghaus waterproof,windproof breathable jacket
Long johns
Jeans
Two pairs socks...one thermal,one ordinary.
Berghaus waterproof,windproof & breathable gloves
Ordinary lightweight shoes

The roads were ok,but cycle tracks and shared paths a bit deadly, freezing over rapidly...so I only did a quick spin of 6 miles...and I realised I was almost too warm, except for my ears...I had my top neck tube pulled up over them, but it kept slipping down...must sort something for this.

I came home after a car overtook me so close he almost brushed my arm...I was riding on the road because the shared path was so icy.

Roll on Spring !!

Luckilly there's none of that white stuff up here, was loads of it but the sun thawed it quickly plus been on the coast and the salty air, it helps a bit.

I wear near to nothing when it was blistering cold, only stuff i was wearing was:

Thick socks
Thermal Pants undernearth cycling pants,
Thermal Top undernearth a thermal cycling top.
Winter cycling gloves
Helmet.

Only thing that was cold was my face.

Also my crown jewels, it went into hibernating.
