What did you make it out of? You don't happen to know a supplier of CroMo steel suitable for the purpose do you?

I 'd like to be able to make an ahead stem that looks slim and elegant to match a steel frame. Such things have been made in the past, but no sooner had threadless headsets been accepted, frames became "chunkier" and the stems were made to match. Slim ahead stems are very few and far between.

I have made a stem extender for the shopper from parts of an old raleigh racer frame - it all depends on what's kicking around.

Thanks. They do lugged stem kits for 1 1/8 steerers but not 1 inch. Nevertheless, they might be able to supply some of the parts. I shall be getting various braze ons and forkends for one of my projects from them.

Alternatively, I might be able to something with cut up too-long-for-me quill stems.

I was thinking "long" as in forward reach. All the stems I have are just standard height.

I alerady have a Clubman, so I don't need to get all hot and bothered I would urge someone to have it though, they are a delight to ride

That said, there's a chap in the same thread looking for a home for a pair of 50s roadsters - he's based in Yorkshire. Maybe one of our Yorkshire brethren could act as a rescue home/distribution point for such unwanted things

...I'm genetically incapable of owning a bike that's in a neglected state How the hell am I ever going to have a bike that I don't care about, will use in any conditions, and won't worry about leaving in the bike shed at work that's routinely battered by numpty fork lift drivers

I think the trick is to get a bike which is a bit unpleasant to ride. My Dahon folder is like that - mildly uncomfortable, a horrible pasty blue colour, and already a bit wrecked having been kept by its previous owner on a boat. Oh and to cap it all it has a derailleur. I would see if I could replace that with a hub gear, but it would still be rather awful even then so I can't be bothered.
