It was There was a British Rail standard class 4MT in steam. (Cue adenoidal voice) These were based on the Fowler design of the late 1920's. Much of the re-design work was done by Mr Riddles in Brighton. The main mechanical change was a reduction in cyclinder size, though the boiler pressure was raised to compensate for that. 155 were built, the 15 that were to be built in 1957 were cancelled due to the introduction of diesel. The early ones had fluted coupling rods that did cause problems, but..... OUCH . Did you throw that, Graham? You could have had my eye out!

Re: togglechaintour bikes
Anyone fancy a two-day Tourette in Norfolk?
I'm planning:
Day 1: Road ride taking-in pleasant back roads and lanes out to Suffolk for lunch and return in the afternoon, taking-in small villages and friendly pubs. Evening ride to a pub for dinner.
Day 2: Morning off-road Exploring Thetford Forest's fire tracks (easy-going, older Roadsters would be fine), with lunch at High Lodge. Afternoon trying out a couple of the MTB tracks around High Lodge. Options of Blue and Green (easy, older Roadsters ok), or Red and Black (difficult, MTB-type bikes) depending on rider preference.
Depending on numbers, camping on my front lawn (back lawn belongs to the dogs) with breakfast catering and bathroom facilities supplied (ie you can travel light with just a lightweight tent and sleeping bag, though two tents can be supplied).

There several in Attleborough, mostly quite nice family-run affairs. I'll compile a list this week
Re: togglechaintour bikes
Count me in.
And I will try and bring a friend who has just bought a Lenton.

Me too! Standard 4MT Moguls were an Ivatt design. The Fowler class 4 was an 0-6-0 based on multiple rebuilds of a Johnson Midland design. We used to call 'em Coffee Pots.
Runs away in shower of thrown pottery.
If at first you don't succeed - cheat!!

It would be late August, or better still early September, just after the sprogs have gone back to school

The Traction Engine collection closed when the owner's fire went out
I think I can find a steam railway or two to avoid
