Interesting signs

Postby Lawrie9 » 23 Mar 2011, 1:08pm

Here is an interesting sign on Dartmoor. The way it leans, the gorse bush in front, the secret code on the post and the quaint village names such as Ponsworthy and Widecombe.

I quite like this one.

Sign.jpg
Higham Village Sign

The village has at least six other signs, one around the midpoint of the main road through the village, the other five at the parish boundary on the main road and various minor roads. All of these upstarts in some way celebrate the village as the historical home of Charles Dickens.

This sign has old bolt holes, almost suggesting some villager has rescued it and moved it to the present location. The Kent "invicta" white horse is bolted separately and whilst such emblems may be found on other old village signs they are uncommon. It's on the main road but is parallel to the carriageway rather than perpendicular to it, again suggesting it has aquired a somewhat unofficial nature. Clearly it has received little by way of maintenance in recent years.

In my mind it has more history than any of it's more modern counterparts in the village and it embodies a defiant spirit.

Okay, It's not Interesting, I just wondered who thought the brown "tourist info" sign on the left was necessary?

One rule for us and another one for them :?

Typical rusty old cast iron road sign, as seen all over the place in the Cornish countryside:

I'm trying to remember if I went past that sign on the Dartmoor Devil Audax last Halloween, certainly came quite close. Anyway I tracked it down on Google street view, do I get a prize? http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&sourc ... 02.02,,0,0

Here is a tank crossing sign on the Lulworth sign. Also I know that Llangedney sign at Crossgates in Mid Wales near where I live. There is a good recycling place just up the road from there and you can find the odd bike in the metal skip.

You wouldn't want to argue with one of these seen near Lulworth. They can really shift and were flying over that hill faster than Marco Pantani.
