I have no answer to that

Post by skicat »

Scene: Sunday. I'm reading the papers.

Me: "I see they've finally found a Higgs Boson".

Mrs Skicat (with apparently genuine interest and enthusiasm): "Where was it?"

I'm not sure the LHC is set up to detect those :?

Without the damn Higgs boson we would get up hills with no effort. They think its the gubbins that gives matter mass. Little tinker! :D

I read that too and thought "is that a type of dust cloud?".

LHC is mostly under France, but as I've not checked the nationality of the detectors you may be right

Nah, the LHC is about 75% Swiss and 25% French.

Also, there is no Higgs, so whatever paper you were reading was spouting sensationalist tosh.

It's far more interesting if mass is the result of something other than the Higgs mechanism (and in fact most of mass is due to strong interactions between quarks and gluons anyhow). The most satisfying answer would be to look again at the data and see that we took the wrong fork in the road 20 years back!

It seems that reports of the finding of the Higg's Boson may have been exaggerated

I'm sure I've got one in a box somewhere at the back of the garage. Should I list it on e-bay?

If it is anything like our house Mrs Higgs tidied up the Boson, if so it will never be found.
