They've put a figure on it of £6 billion a year in costs to the NHS.

I'm sure we've all seen the value in the calculation used to show that motorists were subsidised. It's good to finally have some recognition of the cost.

I don't think it's the cost to the NHS. A death costs the NHS almost nothing.
"We estimate the premature deaths are costing the UK at least £6 billion a year," says Steven Barrett, "and perhaps as much as £60 billion."

And the abstract says:
The total monetized life loss in the UK is estimated at £6–62bn/year or 0.4–3.5% of gross domestic product.
