When I was an apprentice working in the workshop there was one guy who cut his fingers on everything. He was christened Fingers Fereday. When I lived in South Wales they christened people - 'John the Post' , Evans the Milk, etc. Our maintainence manager in the Factory was a Mr Gair, so he became Gair the Repair :D One of the welders Dai was short of teeth except for two in the front. He was known as Dai Central Eating.

I have to say that the best nickname I ever heard was for a chap in my old motorcycle club. His real name is Campbell Baxter. His nick name? Two Soups.
Kelly.

You missed John Smith, or do people named Smith really call their sons John?

I always tell any 'John Smith' I meet how much I admire his beer. :D

Two Soups!

.......... and the ironic ones:
Paddy or Taffy - a Scot
Blondie - black haired
Baldy - thick haired
Tich or Tiny - very tall
Also a chap with an unpronounceable Polish name - we called him Fred.

I knew a "Judy" Garland and a "Skimpy" Nixon (knickers on!) There's always "Barbara" Windsor or "Liz" Hurley, and an "Ena" Sharples too.

Mick for most of my life, but I was "Sammy" on my first ship. Some wag - named Mark Slack* - decided that because my initials are SM that I should be Sammy.

* Mark, where are you now? Lived in Derby or Nottingham I think. HMS Achilles 1971.
Why didn't you have a nickname? Perhaps you didn't need one! :D

Wiggy Bennet

I beleive this is a naval tradition as my dad is always called Wiggy. Anyone know the background to this :?:
At the last count:- Peugeot 531 pro, Dawes Discovery Tandem, Dawes Kingpin X3, Raleigh 20 stowaway X2, 1965 Moulton deluxe, Falcon K2 MTB dropped bar tourer, Rudge Bi frame folder, Longstaff trike conversion on a Giant XTC 840 :D

Worked with a chap in the pit who's nickname was "Sogger" which was apparent as to why when in the showers

After the Falklands War was over the troops left as a garrison on the islands referred to the locals as Ben. (A reference to a charachter in a popular TV soap called Crossroads IIRC.) When this came to the notice of the Commanders they issued orders to stop this practice and so the troops called them Still. As in still Bennies. :D

Nick-names are often ironic, funny or mildly insulting, I think Still was an inspired one.
