I've never spent money on myself, for a luxury item, without having a pang of guilt. (good Yorkshire, Methodist upbringing)

But I'm working hard on it. Having just retired and having a blast with a fabulous (nearly new) ICE trike off Ebay, I can confirm that the retail therapy is beginning to kick in!!!

Not done any of those or want to but the last, I've seen them both, Skye for Minke whales (from land at Rubha Hunish, http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/skye/rubhahunish.shtml) and Gairloch for dolphins (from a boat), seen otters in the wild also.

I had go on one some years ago and really couldn't understand how to do it.

Similar thing ............... stilts.

Big Sis and me had a pair each made by the local carpenter one summer - 1960?
We both tried, she managed a few steps within an hour or two, but I couldn't do it at all. I was 8 and in tears.

However, by persevering and starting off from a wall, I got the hang of it. Within a week, I could be on them all day! :D
By the time I was 10 or 11, I'd made straps to hold my feet to hold the poles to my thighs, and I could walk on them "no hands"! Years later, I would still walk on them.

When our girls were young, I made them a pair. Both of them learned by using my technique and under my instruction. We didn't have tears as it was easy coz I knew how to do it and they learned directly from me. I have no doubt whatsoever that I could stilt-walk even now, and no doubt whatsoever that the girls could do it too. Dunno about Big Sis, but I reckon she could still do it if she tried.

My attempts at unicycling were terrible. I had no instruction and no natural technique available or shown to me, consequently, I gave the thing back.

You need an absolutely smooth, level piece of ground (tarmac, cement, or paved: not grass). Find somewhere like a gateway or narrow passageway, where you can grab two pillars or similar with both hands on either side of you. Position yourself on unicycle with both feet on pedals, your leading foot (the one you normally start off with) forward, crank just above horizontal. Then try to do a half-revolution, letting go of pillars at same time.

You will fall off. Pick yourself up, re-position and try again.

Managed one half-rev? Try a full revolution. Then two. Then three. And away you go!

It took me about a week. But in the intervening years, I've 'lost' the knack...

Oh and btw - the longer part of the saddle goes forward. It should be tilted slightly up - a bit more than in your picture.
Suppose that this room is a lift. The support breaks and down we go with ever-increasing velocity.
Let us pass the time by performing physical experiments...
