Since 2016 you can watch itv etc in catch up form without a licence.

With commercial channels you are paying more for the advertised products because of the cost of advertising. I never go on an advertised package holiday or buy SUVs.

So we are all paying somewhere for things we don't want. It is complex.

Like a lot of people on here we have a catch up box, Supplied by our broadband supplier.
Unfortunately it also does live TV.
The only solution to that is the watch via a computer/laptop and plug it into our TV receiver, but our TV is also a receiver and can receive live TV.
So I dump the TV Which has a first class picture and I buy a large monitor, Fact is that recording TV programmes and watching them later is the most useful feature today.
I know you can also download stuff to watch later to.
A lot of people can't even tuning the TV when they buy even with auto tune, ha ha, many a time I've had to go round my mates house to see his TV His excuse is probably that he can't read.
All this simply because the BBC by the government have inflicted on us.
Gone are the days when you only had the BBC.
The trouble is if you remove yourself completely from TV and you don't buy papers, then you find soon enough you will be totally isolated.
You can't simply rely on YouTube to see what's going on in the world that only tells you what's going on in the other individuals back garden.

I don't agree in the slightest.

People generally, only read the newspapers that agree with their own personal views. They don't buy the opposite.
Newspapers are biased, and you can also argue that any broadcasting medium is biased too. You only consume what you like, and anything else is "wrong".

Best way of being non-isolated is to have an active social life. Mix with different people of different backgrounds and different lifestyles and political views, and who have different outlooks to you, and have good conversations and "arguments" with them and be ready to learn.

I'm NOT talking of being down the pub ........................... so get that out of the way first!

So, are BBC fans caring, community minded people who think everyone should be forced to pay for its programmes because they are good for us, an important public service, just like the NHS?

Or are they cost conscious, self centred people who think we should all be forced to pay for them because it means the BBC continuing much as it does now, continuing to make programmes they like for a cost they like?

I know what I think.

Maybe once upon a time before the Internet. But now the internet is a far richer information source . And you have forgotten radio. But that is best listened to via podcasts - many/most of the BBC output ends up as a podcast, even The World At One. TV is mostly hypnotic with some one else in control, There are only a few things that need tv eg The Olympic Games or some such

hi,
The problem is that most people tend to socialise with people from their own backgrounds.
Or people with similar income levels.

I spent over 10 years working for the general public, poor and wealthy.
It gives you a good insight into how people live their lives and what they are restricted to do because of money.

Poor people can't socialise or if they do they automatically get into debt.

Simply doing voluntary work et cetera won't get you any closer either.
Poor people are very unlikely to do unpaid work.

You and me are simply opposite ends of the scale.
I have not had a single holiday in over three years. And I know that many others here could probably say that over a decade too.

when you have an excess of money like I have in the past the thought of poor people never crosses your mind why would it.

Simply to socialise would not get you educated on what is going on in the world unless you spend every day travelling to different parts of the country and different parts of the world and then you can never be in the right place at the right time.
At least the news tells you something about what's going on in the world, even though it is sometimes biased as we know.

Retiring or not having a daily job/even working on your own, isolates you to new ideas technical or otherwise coming to being, but unless you are in contact and communicate with people who are moving on all the time you simply get left behind.

When I did my Practical engineering training we used high-speed steel cutting tools.
No not that far back to carbon steel ha ha.
Having said that I think we did make tools with carbon steel, certainly learned how to use them and their drawbacks.
When I returned to industry after a period of time they were mainly using tipped tools that is sintered Metal carbide, a dust is compressed and heated to form a biscuit.
They were in the infancy when I was doing my training.
You still need to learn how to grind high-speed steel though.

We will probably need a very broad connections et cetera, not to be left in the dark.

I don't agree that you read exactly what you are interested in, suggesting that is simply saying people are narrow minded enough not to take any notice of what other people are doing even if their lives don't seem interesting.
Mind you I've met a lot of people like that that are single-mindedly self-centred and I'm not interested in anyone else or what anyone else is doing, only interested in what they're immediate self and family are up to.
It's human nature that if you have a family you're more on likely of course now to be more concentrated on that rather than anyone else.

Of course we are individuals all of us and we are always likely to have an opinion based on the way are lives have gone and the way we are living today.
Who am I to say really.

P.S."don't believe everything you read "
In the same way you could say don't believe everything everyone tells you.
And you know when you talk to people they like to spin years don't they.
I will go back to broad connections.

I couldn't comment on "most people" but only the people whom I know.

Poor people can't socialise or if they do they automatically get into debt.
Who said about spending any money?

when you have an excess of money like I have in the past the thought of poor people never crosses your mind why would it.
Who is "you" and "your"?
Do you mean you personally?
Should you not have said, "When I've had and excess of money ...... the thought of poor people never crossed my mind"?

Simply to socialise would not get you educated on what is going on in the world unless you spend every day travelling to different parts of the country and different parts of the world and then you can never be in the right place at the right time.

I don't agree that you read exactly what you are interested in .........
I didn't say that.
I said people generally only read the newspaper that agrees with the way they think.
Daily Mail readers?
Torygraph readers?
Sun readers?
etc etc etc etc

Spent some hours today loading a container to go off to The Gambia.
Long story ................. but the charity Keen4Gambia is one that Mrs Mick F is involved with. She'll be off out there yet again in the next couple of months.
https://www.facebook.com/Keen4Gambia/
Loaded container.jpg

One thing that went on, was a telly. Also, as I think about it, a couple of VCRs too.
I asked around to the people loading, if they needed a TVL in The Gambia.
All - including me - thought not.

If Gambia as small and poor as it is doesn't need a TVL, then why do we?????

I don’t have a TV.
I don’t read papers.
I have Adblock on my pc.
I gave up listening to Radio 4 last year.
I suppose that makes me isolated but only from organisations that seek to put their interests above mine.
My son knows what I am like so fills me in with any genuine or noteworthy news headlines; natural disasters, epidemics, sneezing pandas etc.
The older I get the more I’m inclined to act my shoe size, not my age.

Good.
The world is going to hell in a hand basket - I really don't care to be dragged down with it.
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.
There are two kinds of people in this world: those can extrapolate from incomplete data.

Hi,
So you rely on family friends and associates that you socialise with to tell you what's going on.
Well I suppose you can always wait for the all clear siren can't you

Spot on!

I'm glad we don't contribute. We'll leave that to the TVL payers.

Hi,
There are many groups of people who are housebound or simply not well educated in with modern technology.
So the TV will probably be one of the only forms of entertainment et cetera et cetera.
Their choices are very limited.
I live on an estate with many ageing retired people, and you watch them getting slower and slower, eventually they disappear altogether.

So perhaps free TV licenses as soon as you retire is a good idea.

I hope the BBC licence which incriminates people from watching any TV whatsoever live, is scrapped soon.
