Post by johnonthetyne »

This cycle lane just off a69 near stocksfeild must be one of shortest in Britain. Can't be more than 15 feet.

Luxury.

Is there a 'Cyclists Dismount' sign at the end?

Actually I know the one you mean but your criticism is not fair. It's a staggered junction across a dual carriageway road. Cars are not allowed to use in going South. The cycle lane takes you along about 30 metres or so to allow you to use the crossing so you go straight across the road as there's no other way to do it.

Rule 1 of cycle infrastructure discussion...

Anyone claiming to have found the world's shortest cycle lane will shortly find themselves trumped by someone else's discovery

Yes, I'd use it, it's all about getting across what looks a busy road in a short a time as possible.

For instance this natty little one in Gravesend: Stealth right turn cycle lane, too small to display a cycle symbol!

Just in case you think I'm pulling your leg, a few yards back you'll see the exemption to the left turn other traffic is obliged to make.

I quite expect someone to beat it, I'm already trying to think of other candidates myself  .

We had one featured in the old "Cycling Today" magazine (removed by the Council shortly after!)

Junction and placed on the path... it was exactly 13" square, you couldn't even fit a front wheel into it

Yes that's the same junction I posted. It's entirely sensible to provide a waiting space to access the central reserve gap. Remember that this is a two way path.

I've used it myself and it's sensible and should be there.

I wasn't criticizing it , just saying it was short.

It still looks woefully narrow and poorly designed. How are you meant to legally access it by bicycle from the Stocksfield side? Presumably by dismounting and crossing to it on foot? Is it physically possible to turn either of the 90 degree bends within the painted lines?

This might not be the shortest but may be the most pointless

We'll just have to wait and see see if they put a cycle lane along Ebenezer Place in Wick.

That's in case you get a fairy visit just before the cycle lane starts - safe refuge...
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.
