Garmin GPS touring Europe (easy to use)
Garmin GPS touring Europe (easy to use)
Hi,I'm looking to buy used (Garmin GPS) for European tour. Easy to use,any suggestions? Thanks
Re: Garmin GPS touring Europe (easy to use)
Depends what you buy and what you intend to use it for. All I use mine for is to find restaurants and supermarkets when needed - it is easy for that purpose. It is good if you want to follow preplanned routes, but if you just want a moving map to make up your route on the move, then I'd say it is useless.

Lots of info' on the Web.
This review gives an idea of what's available but does miss out eTrex, Origans etc which some people use :-

There are other makes and the Wahoo "Element" is getting good reviews at the moment. (no personnel experience though).

I have a Garmin 810 and I find it does everything I need and more besides but took me some time to get used to it :-

When choosing remember that most units will need charging once a day unless you have some form of constant supply or back up.
You may need to dowload maps onto the unit unless already included.
Free maps are available :- https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2013/05/dow ... 00810.html
The DCRainmaker site has some good information and worth a peruse.

Etrex 20 would be fine. Uses AA batteries including rechargeable .
Free maps from the likes of openfietsmap.
Can write more if you are interested when I am on a proper keyboard.

Save your $$ and use your SmartPhone (assuming you have one) and download either MapsMe and or OsmAnd offline mapping apps
Attach to your stem using a Quadlock - https://www.quadlockcase.com/
I rode: - The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Thailand & Laos over 7 months / 13000kms last year on m just my phone and picking up local maps from Tourist Info Centers as I went - Worked a Charm

Garmin Montana.
It does everything, and works with gloves on too. Waterproof, shockproof and much better than any mobile phone.
Big bright screen, will take any AA battery or the Li battery that comes with it.
Any map you want.
Mounts on a bicycle, a motorbike, a boat, or a car or even an aircraft if you want.
It'll go for 24 hours on one set of batteries or you can power it from an external source.
Hard part is finding a used one. People who have one ........... like me ......... wouldn't ever part with it because it's so good.

Since reading your recommendation for MapsMe I've tried to install it on my phone to give it a go. Two days later it's still saying download pending.
How long does it take?

Hmmm - thats interesting and probably quite annoying for you!
The OsmAnd maps usually take between 1-5 mins to Download depending on the map size......I downloaded NZ from the MapsMe App last week and it took around the same time for each Island.....only a few minutes.
Maybe uninstall the App and retry???
Sorry I cant be of more assistance.
