We're back after a very successful trip - many thanks for all the advice. The waymarker system was good in the countryside but unreliable in urban areas - we then relied on Google maps on our mobile phones. I recommend a diversion to Marken island, we had a memorable lunch in a sunny wharf-side café there. The 7 speed hub-geared bikes with panniers from Damstraat Rentabike, Amsterdam were OK (but I did miss my own Brooks saddle :( ). Our last morning's journey was a bit of a rush from Haarlem to Amsterdam (planes to catch), so we gritted our teeth and opted to cycle alongside the main N200 motorway. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the Dutch planners had managed to make even this potentially grim route quite pleasurable - lots of greenery and nature reserves. We were blessed with dry weather and light winds so those warnings of howling North Sea storms didn't apply, luckily.
