We're back after a very successful trip - many thanks for all the advice. The waymarker system was good in the countryside but unreliable in urban areas - we then relied on Google maps on our mobile phones. I recommend a diversion to Marken island, we had a memorable lunch in a sunny wharf-side café there. The 7 speed hub-geared bikes with panniers from Damstraat Rentabike, Amsterdam were OK (but I did miss my own Brooks saddle ).
