Amsterdam

Postby KDTrekTouring » 25 Jan 2017, 8:59am

Has anyone got experience getting a bike back from Amsterdam?,

Riding there in a group of 4 over 4 days but don't have a return route planned and don't have the time to ride it.

Looking for an affordable means of travel if possible.

Thanks!

Sorry, my first post got removed for some reason and contained alot more information.

We are traveling from Kent so will need to return to the southeast (or as close as)

Is it 4 people who are coming back, or just you?

If 4 then the cheapest and easiest could be to get someone to drive over and take bikes and riders back. You'd need something like a van with crew cab or a people carrier that has luggage space, probably by removing one set of seats. You can hire such vehicles.

Otherwise probably to fly budget airline to Gatwick from Schipol. Train from gatwick to home.

Edit: Easyjet currently charging £35 for Ams to Gtw. Bikes are about £30 extra and you can use the CTC poly bag.

By domestic train, you could perhaps do Amsterdam-Antwerp, Antwerp-Ostend, then cycle 30 miles or so down the coast to Dunkirk and get the ferry across to Kent. These are old-style Intercity trains so more likely to have decent bike accommodation.

I did this a couple of years ago (but things do change). There was an hourly service but it wasn't that fast. The slight complication is buying bike tickets for Belgian trains in Amsterdam. I don't recall how this was handled.

The ferry from Rotterdam goes to Hull, you'll want to catch the one at Hoek van Holland
