Crewe to Longleat

Post by MiloM »

Hi,

I've never done any long distance cycling but I want to complete this 160 mile route in July as a sponsored cycle.
Do you think this is reasonable on a cheap bike in 2/3 days? I currently cover 30-50 miles a week to an from work but have never done such a distance, would be grateful for any advice!

If you are currently riding to work you are most of the way there. You're got a couple of months so try riding 25-30 miles in one day at the weekend and then add 5 mils each week until you can do 50 miles. Take you time and ride at a comfortable pace.

Regarding your bike as long as it's road worthy and you have the gearing to ride up the hills (or you can get off and push) you should be fine. I once met a man who had ridden from Russia, Kazakhstan, China, India and then down to the Malaysian/Singapore border on a bike that I wouldn't have given £10 for. So you should be OK for 160 miles.
