Scotland: Corran Ferry service suspended

Post by LollyKat »

"The Corran Ferry service in Lochaber has been suspended for the "foreseeable future" after the boat hit rocks near a slipway on Saturday."
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-h ... s-40629605

Repairs may take some time and no back up is available.

I would normally suggest going Oban to Craignure then over Lochaline ferry and up by Ardgour to head of Loch Eil and so back to Fort William. The Oban to Craignure ferries are currently running late due to volume of traffic probably caused by the Corran Ferry problem. These mostly single track roads will probably be busier than usual due to traffic to and from Ardnamurchan but for those from southerly areas probably not too bad but to my mind infinitely better than the A82 particularly north of Corran. If you are using a motorhome as backup note there is a lowish bridge at the head of loch Eil.

Another option for cyclists is the passenger ferry from Ft. William to Camusnagaul, then a nice wee road down the coast to Corran.

Is this the free ferry?
I used it 3 or 4 years ago on my Scottish end to end tour.
2017 Ethiopia.5 weeks.
2018 Marrakech 2 weeks.
2023 Thailand 8 weeks.
Always on a Thorn Raven/Rohloff hub.

Pedal cycles go free and there is no mention of fares for foot passengers, so yes, I presume it is.

Corran ferry is free but Camusnagaul is £1.50 for passengers and £1.50 for bikes.

Camusnagaul ferry operates a loyalty scheme - every 7th journey is free (yay!)

A861, which is the main diversion into or out of Ardnamurchan, is very busy as a result of the Corran ferry being off. Hope it's fixed soon as it's not fun cycling when it's as busy as that.

Nobody seems to have told the locals this is running. A denizen of Moidart was being interviewed this afternoon on BBC and did not seem to know it was working. Suggested next week sometime.

It was pretty widely known at my place of work (well known fish farming company based in Fort William). The road was quiet again today so either people are now aware of it or they're taking a day off for the weather :D :D
