US limits allow up to 20 times more poisonous aflatoxins than the stricter EU regulations

US standards also allow products made with nuts and cereals to have higher levels of the carcinogens, which cause damage to DNA and make cells more prone to becoming cancerous.

US regulations permit 0.5 micrograms per kg of aflatoxins in milk, cereals, nuts and dried fruits, but the EU restricts levels to 0.025 micrograms – twenty times lower.

In all milk and dairy products, EU limits are ten times lower at 0.05 micrograms per kg.

In Australia there have been 2 recalls of China sourced food being recalled due to hepatitis outbreaks. I don't care if the trade is 'free' or not .. I look at the source of the food .. and consider my health before price.

Wasn't it China that caused the baby milk poisoning scandal. Those carrying out the fraud (probably not a strong enough word) added melamine to baby milk to deceive the protein content tests making the milk worth more (or poorer quality product appear better quality) but also causing kidney damage and deaths. And toothpaste containing diethylene glycol (from China again).

The difficulty is that with our capitalist greed based system and where the lower income groups are more than stretched, price can become an overriding factor. When you are choosing between heat or eat, even if you are fully aware of the risks of the cheap imported food you have little choice.

now else where

https://www.thelocal.de/20170811/slovaka-finds-tainted-dutch-eggs-imported-from-germany

and again more in the uk

this article lists the products affected

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2017/aug/10/700000-eggs-linked-to-eu-scare-exported-to-britain-watchdog-says?utm_source=esp&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=GU+Today+main+NEW+H+categories&utm_term=238860&subid=23601318&CMP=EMCNEWEML6619I2

"Four supermarkets have withdrawn products from their shelves as it emerged that 700,000 eggs from Dutch farms implicated in a contamination scare had been distributed to Britain.

The Food Standards Agency said the number of contaminated eggs estimated to have reached the UK was far higher than the 21,000 first supposed, and that egg salads from Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Asda, sandwiches from Morrisons, and sandwich fillers from Waitrose had been withdrawn."

seems like the problem in this country is not fresh eggs in shells but products that use eggs - apparantly some times foreign eggs are used in this case

"A Waitrose spokesperson said the supermarket sometimes used imported eggs when there were insufficient British free-range eggs available on the market to use as an ingredient in own-brand products.

“Three of our sandwich fillers have been withdrawn from sale as a precaution,” the spokesperson said. “Our own assessments based on industry-wide scientific standards have shown that these products do not pose any risk to health.”"

I'm not sure I believe there are insufficient British free-range eggs available when they always seem to be available from most of the local chicken farmers. I suspect it's more a supply problem, where the big food processors want to buy all their eggs in one hit from a big multi-farm business, rather than deal with the small farms, and there's only so many businesses with enough acres of chicken sheds, so they buy from abroad sometimes... which is actually good for me, as I'd rather buy local eggs and make my own food, rather than buy processed food.

No worries, once we're out of the EU, Whitehall will simply redefine "toxic" in order to get a trade deal with the US and it'll cure problems like this before they hit the headlines(!)

The risk of eating these eggs is very low. The German office for risk assessment says that the level is well below the ADI (acceptable daily intake). They also checked long-term exposure, assuming the illegal use has been going on for some time, again: no problem. The dose is too low. Fipronil is about twice as toxic as caffeine (a natural substance in coffee and tea).

You can start every ride on an egg.
