Megabus cheap train tickets?

Post by mercalia »

I was talking to a worker at the Portland Bill YHA and she said that cheap train tickets were available with megabus - Has any one used them to get around ( with their bike )?

They also run services under other names. eg The Falcon Flyer up and down the M5 https://www.stagecoachbus.com/promos-an ... alcon-faqs,
And if you have an oap bus pass you can use it for some of the journey, ie Plymouth/ cullompton or Taunton/ bristol. But it means going from Plymouth to Bristol you have to get off at cullompton and ride the 20 miles to Taunton up the A38 before getting back on

At the last count:- Peugeot 531 pro, Dawes Discovery Tandem, Dawes Kingpin X3, Raleigh 20 stowaway X2, 1965 Moulton deluxe, Falcon K2 MTB dropped bar tourer, Rudge Bi frame folder, Longstaff trike conversion on a Giant XTC 840 :D

It's only available on Stagecoach's South West Trains and East Midlands Trains, so routes out of Waterloo and St Pancras and even then not every combination of endpoints. See http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel ... ickets#map - some of those, like Bristol-London and Exeter-London are slower than GWR's alternatives. When it's useful, it's useful, but it's not often useful.

I've used them a few times for Nottingham to London which is often to be found for £13.50 each way which is considerably better than booking the same train elsewhere. Only used once with a full bike (Other times it's been the folder) MB website says E Mids Trains don't take bikes, E Mids website lets you book them! Train has always been a HST with a guards van which you let yourself into, wasn't asked about the bike reservation.

Just had a little play and it's now offering Derby to London trains from £8  When I last tried they were only offering coach travel and it was quicker for me to ride into Notts and get a train from there. But the routes are very limited.

Megatrain tickets start being released about 45 days ahead, compared with about 80 for normal Advance tickets and it's more variable.
