Hotels/B&Bs but would prefer own hot cooked meals

Paull Holme Farm bnb give you an ensuite room and a self service kitchen with big kettle, microwave and seating. They wouldn't be against you using a stove in there either. But it is in the wilds of East Yorkshire.

Not quite sure what the OP's issue is with included breakfast, most bnb's offer something for everyone and are very flexible - they have to be, we the customer's are their life blood after all.

As for evening meals - if I can avoid diy after a days ride I will. So whilst I have self catered at bnb's and hotels I prefer to sit down to food someone else has prepared.

I have no issue with included breakfasts (I didn't mention them) and places where not included am happy enough using supplied kettle to make hot water for tea/coffee and porridge in a pot/bag, hence my OP didn't mention it:

Hotel dinners are expensive and probably richer than what I would cook myself if camping, so I wondered how to cook the same tinned stuff as when camping in hotel/B&B without breaking rules and being evicted B&Bs of course usually don't do dinner.

The words "youth" and "hostel" come to mind. But then so do "shared" and "dormitory". It is strange how the two go together but are rarely otherwise discovered apart. I did stay in accommodation recently in Portsmouth which was like a normal B&B but had no breakfast but did have a shared kitchen - that is very unusual though.

Many hostels (inc independent ones) do now have private rooms so you can cook yourself and have your own room. They tend to be reasonably priced if there is more than one of you but fairly expensive for lone travelers, though cheaper than most b&bs.

I was about to say same as Jon Lucas above: many YHs have single rooms for a reasonable price, giving you privacy with the benefits of shared kitchen and of course, you can choose to socialise or not with the other people.

AirBnb is also pretty good.

But the now sparser YHs are too far apart and as I dislike prebooking, not numerous enough, hence my questions about hotels/B&Bs.

gas is probably the better medium for indoor cooking, smell wise it's no different to taking back a takeaway IMO which is what I usually like to do, pick up some food and find a view to look at.

Late summer tour in France we stayed in cheap hotels like Ibis and used the money saved to eat in decent restaurants each evening.

I agree. A few times I just haven't bothered with a dinner and then looked forward to (and appreciated) the breakfast.

Probably not a lot of use for you, but most Japanese hotels have a microwave for guests, plus your room kettle. You can buy a wide variety of ready meals in the ubiquitous convenience stores. Many hotels also sell pot noodles.

Simple facilities like these would make life cheaper and easier in the UK. Not sure that all b&b owners would like the smell of curry or fish and chips pervading their establishment.

Maybe I'm missing out on the obvious, but as I see it, you have 2 variations of a solution open to you...

The first is to stop to eat before your accommodation. I mean when you're reasonably close to your destination. Stop, cook, eat, ride a bit then check in.

If it's noodles etc. that you want to eat, you could get something like this (Flask)

cook your food en route, hold it warm in the flask & eat at your destination. I have one of these and consider it an essential part of my cooking kit.

The second is simply to ask in the B&B/hotel where you could cook your dinner! My experience is that most people in the business are naturally helpful, especially to weary bike travelers. I wouldn't be surprised if you were offered some nice spots to cook & eat. Explain (if you think you need to) that you have a "special" dietary requirement.

I for one would not be comfortable trying to cook a sustaining meal, stealthily in a B&B/Hotel bedroom, and I'm fairly sure the operators wouldn't be either. Especially not with a Trangia!

Later in the year, when using hotels etc, I don't want to stop before accommodation, even near it, because the delay may mean more chance of having to navigate in the dark , I really want to know I have got accommodation first. Plus, finding somewhere to cook in an urban area might require more boishyness than I have available .

Hmmm, that would also allow purchase of proper simple dinner somewhere (cafe/garage?). I don't think I want to lug a flask and stove but a food flask alone might be the most workable idea so far . I really want to arrive before I cook.

A bit of a gamble as I don't want to pre-book, I suppose less of a gamble at B&Bs but they are less likely to be open in autumn/winter.

Me, neither: I thought I was clearing only suggesting electrical cooking using an appliance similar to that operator is already happy to provide: i.e. they provide a kettle*, so using ones own similar kettle/device as a soup maker doesn't seem so much of a leap. I have rejected all previous posts mentioning stoves for the obvious reasons. *which I would only use to boil water, hence own device.

Falkland islands 1990, the bread was past its best, we were bored and the iron belonged to the RAF police. same principle as cheese dreams but without the frying pan.

you can also do cheese on toast by laying a toaster on its side.

doing backwards cooking you can make toasties with a bit of foil and some embers - or I use the top of the wood burner in the cabin. which is also pretty good for popcorn.

Most conventional cylindrical tins of vegetables/meat in sauce/small potatoes are still steel so one could perhaps make a suitable enclosing inductive apparatus to cook stuff in the (partially opened) tin....

Be sure to puncture or open the tin before heating it, else it might explode
