Majorca, Cala D'or

Post by mnichols »

I've got a family holiday booked in Cala D'or Majorca at Easter

It's a family holiday not a tour so might just get a few 1/2 day rides, and can't take the bike as I can't fit it in the hire car

Can anyone recommend some routes (up to 70 miles, but anything over 20) and bike hire in the area?

Thanks

I can recommend Max Huerzeler but the nearest to Cala D'or is in Colony Sant Jordi

https://www.huerzeler.com/en/mietraeder

As for rides 70 miles just about rules out the mountains on the NW coast. However the are some nice climbs up to monasteries, sanctuaries or castles near by; San Salvador near Felanixt ( 1st café at top has the best view from a urinal ever!), Sanctuary of Cura near Randa, the hermitage of Bonany near Vilafranca Bonany. If you avoid the main roads the interior of the island has lots of virtually car free roads. Just go onot Cycletravel, pick a few towns and create a circular route and you can't go far wrong.

We use, https://www.velosportmallorca.com/en/about-us

Very good service, deliver and pick to/from your holiday place so no need to off finding a rental place.
Possibly not the first place i would choose to stay and cycle from in Mallorca, but still some good stuff to explore, nr Felanitx you have the San Salvador climb and nr Llucmajor you can climb Cura or Randa as it tends to be called, both with glorious views. A visit to the square in Petra is a must, you will have never seen so many bikes.... along the coast to Porto Cristo and cala Millor and Bona are all possibilities.

It's worth getting hold of the Malllorca Bike Map. Most of the bike hire places will sell you one and it shows the network of recommended quieter roads to cycle. It looks like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Majorca-bicycle-map-Alpina-Editorial/dp/8480903635 but get the most up to date one you can find.

The trip up the mountain to the monastery (as mentioned above) is a good ride. But there are good rolling routes across the centre of the island through Sineu (geographic centre of the island) and the Es Pla (central plain). Head north to Muro (on a hill) and have a buffet lunch at Sa Fonda, a traditional Mallorcan restaurant frequented by locals as well as the tourists. Lots of windmills to see on the way.

Sorry for a bit of hijacking. We pass this place on almost all of our return rides and sometimes have lunch on the main strip in Can Picafort. It would be nice to try somewhere new. Is the board in the picture advertising the buffet? I can't work out what the first thing is Plato de cuchaea? the nearest I can get is cuchara (spoon) which might be soup! The others are hot dishes, cold dishes, dessert and drink. Mrs Whoof is a vegetarian (no fish) and I wondered if there were options that she could try in the buffet.

I'm a vegetarian (no meat or fish or seafood) and have had lunch at Sa Fonda many times. It's a traditional place and they speak a bit of English. Buffet lunch is from 1pm to 3pm (I think) daily. You pay about 10 euros and you get a plate and help yourself from a huge buffet - cooked food, bread, fruit and deserts. I think a soft drink is included (please check). Just ask one of the staff if you are in doubt about a dish and say "Soy vegetariano" (I'm a vegetarian). But there is lots on offer. There's also some lovely old black and white photos on the wall inside showing Muro of 50 years ago. I love this place because the locals including the builders turn up and eat there. They are closed on one or two days of the week. There's a cycle rack outside. I take all my friends there.

I've no idea! The language could be Castellano (Spanish) or a variation of Catalan - Mallorcain. Just go in at 1pm and have a look at what's going on. Be patient it's all very manana, which is what I love about it.

As above recommendations for Randa & San Salvador. I would second getting the bike map mentioned as there are miles of little lanes (Cami's).
My favourite road on the island runs from Randa to Montuiri to St'Joan to Petra. (especially with a following wind  )
65 mile round trip :- https://ridewithgps.com/routes/26763661
Main roads generally are fine to cycle on as traffic is usually courteous and they honour the 1.5 metre rule.
Most towns/villages have cafes but can be a little awkward to navigate through the small streets.
Couple of other towns within easy reach are Manacor (main town) and Porreres.
You'll never know if you don't try it.

If you are going to Porreres I can recommend the Es Centro restaurant. On the main (pedestrianised) street where they hold a weekly market. Food served from 1pm. I think it's closed on a Monday.

The one directly opposite is pretty good as well.

There is lots of good riding from Cala D'or though the Ma-4012/14 can get very windy and it does incorporate some long climbs. The lanes off the main drag are a delight especially the ones off the Ma-6014 leading up to Llucmajor. I'm out there again at the end of Feb.

Ha! we have been caught a couple of times with places that close for one day a week.
Here's one :- http://www.talaiotscapocorbvell.com
But if that's closed then this is close-by :- https://www.facebook.com/pages/Cas-Buss ... 9518439287
About 26 miles from Cala D'or.

Hi, we were out there in Oct 17 and used a bike hire called Bike Experience. Good quality carbon road bikes (Giant Cervelo etc) and very competitive rates. They will deliver and collect anywhere on the island. Contact info@bikeexperiencemallorca.com.
